IntSights Digital Marketing Manager Alexandra Carney said three of the largest threats to brick and mortar casinos were; “fake or phishing domains, logins with money balance for sale and card scams.”
The 30 casino resorts that were analysed for the purposes of the review were not named in the report and the hacks were identified through analysing a host of data from the black market, hacking forums, and other platforms.
Attacks towards online casinos are often perpetrated via the dark web. A section of the internet not indexed by search engines such as Google. The dark web is considered a dangerous place and is home to hackers, whistle-blowers and more sinister organisations and activities.
According to IntSight, the aim of the research was to help enhance security teams on hand at both online and land casinos and; “fortify their infrastructure against attacks.”
Land Casino Security Hacks More Likely
Unlike land casinos, online casinos can put a number of preventative measures in place that provide vault-like encryption for personal details. Most importantly, the implementation of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) provides the encryption of the web server and browser. This is most commonly indicated by the HTTPS prefix within the URL. Paired with this, there’s typically a padlock symbol that signifies safety.
