How the Use of AI Could Aid Cheating at Online Casinos

Artificial intelligence, widely called AI, is everywhere these days. You can’t read about anything without also reading about AI-powered tools, AI-powered solutions, AI-powered SOMETHING.

Obviously, the concept found its way straight to the online casino industry, which has always been a ground for innovative technologies.

Operators report using it to prevent fraud and ensure fairness. AI is bringing other benefits to players, such as personalised gaming experiences through their high data collection and analytic capabilities.

And while most things sound good, we must say that AI is also used for some not-so-good activities. More precisely, there’s been a rise in AI-assisted online casino cheating.

That’s exactly what we’re going to write about in this article. Let’s see how nifty players are utilizing artificial intelligence to their advantage and if it’s really working out for them.

How Cheaters Are Utilising AI

Perhaps the strongest suit of AI tools is their possibility to go through large databases and provide analysis and predictions. What would take a single person months or years usually takes minutes or hours for a well-built AI program.

Of course, cheaters have been around forever and they’re coming up with new cheating methods every generation. So, it made sense that they would find a way to implement the power of AI into their attempts.

It’s fair to say that this type of cheating doesn’t help anyone.

Let’s say a person does it while playing against other players (peer-to-peer poker). In this case, they impose financial damages on those players who are playing fair and square.

If they do it to online casino operators, they’re still abusing technology for personal gain. These steps ruin the trust between operators and users. Moreover, they often trigger counter-responses that may sometimes be needlessly strict for other players who weren’t using any unfair practices.

Commonly Used Methods of AI-Assisted Cheating

If you’re someone who isn’t all that tech-savvy and can’t understand how AI can do any harm to online casino operators, no worries. We did a lot of research to understand the concept ourselves and to help our readers grasp it.

We’ve found the most common ways they’re using (or, more precisely, abusing) AI to try and cheat online casinos.

  • Automated card counting – While games with RNG outcomes don’t use standard decks of cards, live dealer games and peer-to-peer poker still do. In these situations, cheaters may use automated card counting to decide their next steps.
  • Trained playing bots – Playing bots can analyse how competitors are behaving and play optimally by using this knowledge. That would give the cheater an unfair advantage.
  • Predictive algorithms – Predictive algorithms mostly help with online slots and online table games. These algorithms collect and analyse the data to predict when should the next winning rounds be. That gives the player an idea of when to spin and when to wait.
  • Analytics programs – Finally, we have to mention AI-powered analytics tools that collect as much data as possible. Then, they use it for creating all kinds of playing strategies, be it against other online players or casino games directly.

How Using AI to Gain an Advantage Can Impact You

If you’re thinking that AI-assisted cheating is the best way to gain some financial boosts, we urge you to think twice. Despite reports of players tricking online casinos, there’s a lot unsaid still. Consequences for such behaviours exist, and we would never advise you to go down that road.

First, let’s mention the basic consequence, which is issues with the authorities. Cheating simply isn’t allowed, and the operator may report your activities to the authorities. Players often have to verify their identities, so the operator will have all the necessary information to report them.

We did some research on this and haven’t found someone arrested for AI-assisted cheating. However, there are plenty of reports of people facing consequences for gambling-related scams. Here are some examples:

  • A player and casino workers were charged in a roulette cheating scheme in Pennsylvania.
  • A live dealer employed by Evolution was arrested and charged with cheating at an online casino in Connecticut.
  • Several players and a dealer were arrested and charged for table game cheating in Philadelphia.
  • A Czech man was jailed for cheating several casinos by gaining an advantage on slot machines using a smartphone.

Our point with these examples is that casino operators are always on the lookout for suspicious behaviour. They won’t let it slide.

Another aspect to mention here is the ethical implication. Online gambling and gambling in general are games of chance and hobbies. People do it to have fun, hoping they win some nice prizes along the way.

When cheaters come into the picture, they ruin it for everyone involved. Scamming operators that work legally or with other players just isn’t right and morally acceptable.

What Online Casinos Are Doing to Combat This

Casino operators, both land-based and online, have always been vigilant when it comes to fighting cheating. And when we say cheating, we refer to cheating of any kind. As the ways players cheat evolve, so do the ways operators protect their businesses.

We’ve read some reports and found some press releases. We used the knowledge to create a shortlist of common ways operators combat AI-assisted casino cheating.

  • Advanced encryption – Encryption technologies are improving as the need for strong protection increases. Online casinos invest in the best of the best products to ensure their games run as expected and avoid any cheating attempts.
  • AI-driven security systems – AI cheating meets AI security systems way more than you could guess. Just like potential cheaters are implementing these programs to their advantage, operators do so, too.
  • Cybersecurity collaboration – Even when online casino operators don’t have in-house security, they work with cybersecurity firms. These third parties provide them full protection in case of issues, as well as recommendations on how to stay ahead of cheaters.

What Does the Online Casino Future Look Like Thanks to AI

Back in 2001, Artificial intelligence used to be a sci-fi movie portraying a future that may or may not come. In 2024, artificial intelligence is the base of thousands of tools that help people achieve good and not-so-good things.

It’s reshaping everything we know, and it makes sense that it’s affecting iGaming, too.

While scammers do exist, we’re seeing a lot of AI innovation and research dedicated to improving how we gamble online. AI is used to enhance game fairness, detect early gambling risk, and personalise iGaming experiences.

It’s only a matter of time before iGaming turns into AiGaming. But a lot is at stake. We can only hope that positive things will prevail while cheating is minimised.

Why?

Well, if all online casinos closed due to successful cheaters, we wouldn’t have the amazing and entertaining world of iGaming.

An entire industry is at stake, and that’s not something you can ignore. iGaming isn’t only a great source of entertainment. It’s also a profitable market that employs thousands of people and generates massive revenues in taxes.

Most importantly, if not overseen and carefully handled, it can become very dangerous. And, as always, those most at risk will be the most affected.
