Igaming identity theft gang uncovered in n Ontario
By Ramona Depares
Months of investigation by the Ontario police came to a dramatic end as two people from Toronto have been formally charged with fraudulent activities related to Canadian online casino sites. The inquiry, which was launched following a report of fraudulent activity on Ontario’s iGaming website, culminated in two people being charged with a total of 21 offences.
According to Canadian media outlet CityNewsEverywhere, it all started in July 2022, with allegations of identity theft being committed on the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) iGaming website. Both the provincial police and the enforcement arm of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) were immediately alerted.
More reports of fraudulent activity followed in August of the same year, this time on the OLG’s online sportsbook. Police had seized a number of electronic devices, fraudulent documents and instruments related to separate criminal offences from a residence in North York.
Finally, December 2023 saw the arrest of Ernesto Rasing, a 38-year-old from Toronto, and of Elaiza Mae Paculanan, aged 20. BayToday reports that the duo are facing a total of 10 fraud-related charges including;
- The use of forged documents
- Possession of credit card
- The use of credit card data
- Possession of an identity document
- An instrument solely intended for copying credit cards
- Identity theft
Investigations are continuing in this case.
What is igaming identity theft?
Identity theft presents a very real risk for all online casinos in Canada. The official Canadian government website describes identity theft as “the unauthorized use of your information by third parties”, involving the collection and use of personal information such as your name, date of birth, address, social insurance number (SIN), as well as any other personal details for criminal purposes.
Within the iGaming landscape, this means that your data will be used at online casinos in Canada under false pretences, with the scope of facilitating winnings and cashouts. Seon Technologies, a company specialising in cyber security, explains that there are several types of gambling fraud, with the below being the most common:
- The creation of multiple accounts using fake credentials
- Bonus abuse, usually using fake accounts
- Tournament fixing, known as ‘gnoming’, is made possible when several accounts collude together to help one other account win
- Flooding a table with multiple fake accounts that will all be used to obtain favourable results for one specific player
The above criminal activity requires the use of fake accounts, which is why identity theft is such a big problem at some online casinos in Canada. And the issue is not limited to Canada, but worldwide.
And if you’re wondering whether such practices carry serious repercussions for operators and players, the answer is yes. Even the best online casinos in Canada can find themselves crippled if they end up targeted by such scammers. For starters, the site may end up falling foul of gambling regulations if it’s being unwittingly used for money laundering purposes.
Moreover, there is a hefty financial cost to consider, as those who indulge in identity theft usually do so to abuse the bonus system and to lock in unfair winnings. Finally, the practice can also end up damaging other players, as the end game sometimes includes accessing other players’ funds illegally.
This is why identity checks are important for online casinos
It is vital for any online casino in Canada to make sure that its identity verification and KYC processes are on point, not only to ensure compliance and avoid fines or even license suspension but also to protect players, safeguard the casino’s revenue and be able to continue operations without any legal hassles.
Luckily, the best online casinos in Canada make use of highly sophisticated software so as to minimize the chances of fraud. There are several ways an operator can protect itself from unscrupulous scammers, and many of these are actually a legal requirement laid down by the FINTRAC (Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada) and AGCO (Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario).
Gambling regulations lay down that online casinos in Canada must carry out thorough Know Your Customer (KYC) processes by using identity data or document verification when onboarding new players. According to Ontario-based GBGPLC, which supplies identity verification services, these regulations can be achieved in two different ways.
The first option is by means of a single match to a credit file held by a Canadian credit bureau. This is only FINTRAC compliant if it’s at least three years old, so players with relatively new credit history may find it difficult to have their identity verified. This usually happens in the case of players who are legally old enough to gamble, but are still young.
The second option is via two credit file matches, each of which must be at least six months old. Most sites favour this method, as it delivers very rapid onboarding decisions that are KYC-compliant without precluding players who may still be too young for a three-year-old match.
There are other measures that are taken by online casinos in Canada to minimize the risk of identity fraud as much as possible. These include a solid digital footprint analysis, whereby given email addresses and phone numbers are linked to social media accounts and other online platforms. Conducting an IP fraud score analysis is another effective method, as is password hash analysis. The latter is particularly foolproof as scammers with more than one fake account almost never bother to create unique passwords for each fraudulent account.
Having thorough identity verification and KYC processes in place is not only a must for any Canadian online casino to avoid fraudulent activity. It also ensures that the site takes its responsible gambling obligations seriously, as no player will be able to bypass an application for self-exclusion.
Victims of igaming identity theft in Ontario urged to report crimes
One of the most worrying aspects of all this is that your identity may be stolen without you even knowing about it. The Ontario consumer protection branch provides a list of signs to look out for. These include:
- Failing to receive expected bills and statements, as someone may have changed the mailing address for your accounts.
- Receiving calls from collection agencies or creditors for an account you don’t have.
- Receiving bank notifications about a new account in your name, or added charges.
- Your financial statements don’t match your actual financial activity.
- You receive calls from a credit agency to say you’ve been approved or denied credit that you haven’t applied for.
What should you do if you believe that you’ve been targeted by one of these criminals and that you’ve been the victim of iGaming identity theft? Ontario authorities advise you to report the matter without delay to all the relevant authorities. According to Canadian government services, you should immediately follow the steps below:
- File a report with the local police.
- Report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (1-888-495-8501)
- File a report with your bank and credit card companies. Stop all existing cards and request new bank or credit cards with new numbers on them.
Identity theft is a very serious business at the end of the day, and you should never make the assumption that it will not happen to you. But by staying vigilant and exercising caution, you’ll be able to continue enjoying your time at the top Canadian online casinos without the fear of fraud.
Archbishops call for a ban on gambling adverts in Ontario
By Shadrack Kairu
A powerful trio of Ontario bishops recently made a joint statement calling for a complete prohibition of advertisements relating to Canadian online casinos and sports betting across all media platforms in the province.
Archbishop Linda Nicholls of the Anglican Church of Canada, National Indigenous Anglican Archbishop Chris Harper, and other bishops of the ecclesiastical province of Ontario believe such promotions should face the same marketing restrictions as tobacco.
“We urge you to recognize that the well-being of people can be deeply affected by addiction to gambling which is now brought into the living rooms and on the laptops, smartphones and tablets through this business model,” their statement read in the Anglican Journal.
While not condemning gambling itself given it’s a personal choice, the religious leaders opposed policies allowing unrestrained promotion of potentially addictive behaviours to impressionable demographics like youth and vulnerable groups.
The archbishops further encouraged Anglicans across Ontario to join the Campaign to Ban Ads on Gambling and contact their members of parliament demanding the disestablishment of iGaming in the province.
In their statement, the bishops expressed grave concerns over the psychological effects and risks posed by widespread gambling advertising across media.
They believe the constant exposure to betting promotions in living rooms and personal devices strongly enables and encourages addictive gambling habits. From their experience ministering to affected congregations, the bishops want to spare more families this “suffering” by limiting betting ads through responsible provincial policies.
More support for ad bans from the Canadian Mental Health Association
The archbishops’ anti-gambling advertisement position closely mirrors that of major mental health organizations in Ontario like the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).
Last May, the CMHA directly petitioned the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) to impose a total ban on online gambling promotions in the province. Their proposal was aimed at protecting children from the influence of betting the same way tobacco marketing laws shield minors from the appeal of smoking.
The mental health authority cited alarming rates of youth experimenting with internet gambling in Canada, often initiated through constant exposure to sportsbooks and online casino adverts. According to a 2021 study, online gambling among students increased from 4% to 15% between 2019-2021.
If an outright prohibition proves impossible, the CMHA is lobbying for mandatory safeguards to curb underage exposure to gambling promotion. Their shared goal with the archbishops is to prevent the next generation from developing gambling disorders early in life.
Celebs and athletes will be barred from promoting online gambling in Ontario in 2024
This is not the first time gambling advertisements have come under the spotlight in Ontario. In 2023, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) announced plans to revise its standards on the use of celebrities, influencers and athletes that promote online casinos and sportsbooks. The updated policies are scheduled for implementation by February 2024.
Key restrictions include barring personalities with clear youth appeal from appearing in Ontario online gambling ads. The regulator hopes to counter the power of role models like sports stars normalizing gambling through endorsements tied to sports broadcasts.
However, famous faces may still participate in responsible gambling campaigns that promote positive play and provide resources for players battling addiction. The AGCO believes balanced reforms can limit youth exposure while allowing operators to market to adult audiences.
Initial talks between regulators and industry representatives show promise for a smooth transition to the new rules. The AGCO aims to strike a balance between enabling Ontario’s new internet gaming market and instituting vital safeguards against youth addiction.
Unlike AGCO’s targeted approach, the archbishops advocate for sweeping legislative changes modelled on existing bans for tobacco adverts. They point to provincial laws recognizing the harm of tobacco marketing and urge leaders to view gambling promotions through the same protective lens.
In their view, allowing businesses to advertise potentially addictive activities to the population, especially teens and other high-risk groups, violates principles of ethical corporate conduct and fair consumer protection.
Archbishop Nicholls asserts that society accepts reasonable limits on marketing products like alcohol, tobacco, firearms or pharmaceuticals to children due to public health considerations. In her view, the same rationale applies to prohibiting gambling ads that research shows actively “endangers adolescent mental wellbeing”.
Rather than addressing issues retroactively through addiction support programs, the archbishops believe Ontario should be more proactive in preventing youth gambling disorders from developing in the first place. They hope sympathetic lawmakers will share their perspectives and champion reforms.
A core concern expressed by the archbishops is how embedding online gambling into mobile devices and routine at-home media consumption risks normalizing addictive behaviour for Ontario families.
They argue the government would never allow uncontrolled advertising for cannabis, alcohol or tobacco in family television viewing and social media. Yet, they say the current policies ignore the parallel mental health impacts of promoting 24/7 at-home betting options.
The bishops believe strongly that exposing children and parents to a constant barrage of gambling ads during family viewing culture severely downplays the risks of problem gambling. It portrays high-stakes wagering as a harmless form of entertainment rather than the serious psychiatric issue health professionals acknowledge it can become.
Online Gambling in Ontario
The archbishops’ statement follows explosive growth in Ontario’s online gambling market since regulated operations launched in April 2022. Operated by the provincial government agency iGaming Ontario, the new digital marketplace has exceeded early projections.
In its debut year, over 1.6 million active player accounts wagered a staggering $35.6 billion on online casinos in Canada, sportsbooks and other gaming sites. These figures catapult Ontario into one of the top five internet gambling jurisdictions on the continent.
According to national statistics, around 1.6% of Canadian gamblers exhibit moderate to severe gambling disorders. In a large province like Ontario, this translates to approximately 25,600 adults struggling with harmful gambling habits as the market expands.
For underage users, there is a concern as several studies show underage users take up gambling earlier in age from offshore sites.
Presented with the archbishops’ statement, iGaming Ontario reiterated its foundational mandate is to make regulated online gambling safer for Ontarians compared to the previous unregulated offshore marketplace.
The agency believes allowing licensed operators to advertise their provincially sanctioned offerings helps better inform players of the important consumer protections that were previously absent with unregulated offshore operators.
These include mandatory responsible gambling tools like deposit limits, timed gaming breaks, and self-exclusion options. They also want operators to invest in public awareness campaigns focused exclusively on responsible gambling messaging and addiction support resources.
While sympathetic to concerns around youth exposure, iGaming Ontario contends their upcoming celebrity endorsement restrictions complement their efforts in promoting healthy play among adults. The agency argues that a measured approach can enable Ontario’s regulated internet gaming market while still prioritizing public well-being through crucial safeguards.
Ultimately, the archbishops hope that increased public debate over gambling advertising laws, informed by compassionate concern for those struggling with addiction, leads to greater corporate responsibility across the online betting industry.
With supportive lawmakers willing to lead legislative reforms modelled on precedents like tobacco marketing bans, the bishops believe Ontario has a genuine opportunity to become a leader in proactive, ethical approaches to regulating high-risk behaviours.
By taking bold action, they hope the province could set a progressive example for jurisdictions worldwide grappling with the rise of digital gambling.

Rules of the Game: Responsible Advertising without Dampening the Fun
In the high-octane gaming world, where excitement and entertainment collide, responsible advertising is crucial in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all players. In Ontario, the gaming industry is not just about hitting the jackpot; it’s also about setting a gold standard for responsible advertising practices.
Here’s how Ontario manages to strike the perfect balance between promoting fun and safeguarding player well-being:
Balancing Entertainment and Responsibility
Responsible advertising in Ontario is a delicate act of balance. It’s about creating ads that spark excitement and anticipation while reminding players to gamble responsibly. The goal is to maintain the allure of gaming without encouraging excessive or irresponsible betting. This approach ensures that players have a good time without crossing the line.
Stringent Regulations for Safer Gaming
In Ontario, appropriate advertising is not left up to chance. The government has imposed stringent rules governing the timing, location, and substance of gaming advertisements. These rules are intended to stop ads that prey on the weak or encourage gamers to place risky bets. They provide a structure that protects gamers and the market’s integrity.
Players’ Education Campaigns
Being a responsible gamer is more than just a catchphrase; it’s a dedication to player welfare. Canadian online Casinos conducts instructional programs to warn gamers about the possible consequences of gaming and how to exercise self-control. These efforts increase public knowledge of safe gaming procedures and the services available to help individuals in need.
Monitoring and Enforcement
Promoting responsible gaming requires more than rules on paper; it needs proactive enforcement. Ontario actively monitors the gaming industry to ensure that advertising practices comply with the regulations. This vigilance includes taking action against operators or advertisers who don’t play by the rules. By holding everyone accountable, Ontario maintains a safe gaming environment.
Support for Problem Gamblers
Ontario makes sure that gamers are aware of their resources in the event of a problem when playing responsibly. Advertisements frequently provide contact details and resources for people with gambling-related issues. This proactive strategy makes sure that players are aware of the resources available to them and motivates them to ask for help when they need it.
Community Involvement and Feedback
Ontario Casinos understands that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to responsible advertising. The government solicits input on advertising methods from the gaming community through active engagement. Ontario Casinos hopes to develop regulations that are not only practical but also sensitive to the demands of business by including participants and operators in the process. Maintaining a vibrant but responsible gaming environment requires teamwork.
With All These Figures, We Believe the Regulation Is Here to Stay
Given the astounding numbers and Canadian online Casinos booming gaming industry, it is clear that the law has not only been successful but is here to stay. The data indicates a healthy market, engaged players, and responsible gaming habits. Ontario has established itself as a model for how gaming markets can grow while putting player enjoyment and safety first.
Celebrities and athletes to be barred in 2024 from promoting online gambling in Ontario
The face of online casinos in Canada is set to undergo a drastic change as The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) is set to ban any gambling advertising material that features celebrities. The ban also covers athletes, who are considered high-profile public figures under Canadian law.
With the gambling ban coming into effect as early as February 2024, this new responsible gambling measure is bound to impact not only any gambling activity at online casinos in Canada but also the celebrities themselves. Athletes and stars have long been the preferred brand ambassadors for many online gambling campaigns, a practice that will now have to change.
Minors idolizing celebrities and athletes is a concern
The measure was announced by AGCO as a means of curbing the activities of children and minors in gambling activities. It will mostly impact advertising within the province of Ontario, the territory where AGCO exercises legal authority over all forms of gambling.
The move could see the best online casinos in Canada having to rethink their entire advertising strategy, as many previous campaigns have used athletes like track runner Andre DeGrass, NHL stars Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews and ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky as ambassadors for various top online casinos Canada.
Among the reasons behind this ban, the regulator cited concerns that children tend to idolize public figures and use them as role models.
This could lead to a situation where they try to emulate the activities they see their icons depicting.
AGCO CEO Tom Mugham
These fears arose following reports made by The Centre for Addictions and Mental Health, which is the largest mental health teaching hospital in Canada. In May 2023, the Centre presented formal submissions to ACGO specifically calling for the “restriction of athlete and celebrity participation in advertising for internet gaming”, adding that such advertising should be “directed primarily to adults”.
By taking these recommendations on board and stopping influential figures from being the faces of online gambling, AGCO aims to increase protective measures to discourage children and youths from taking an early interest in online casinos in Canada.
The measure is extended to athletes given that these, too, are viewed as celebrities by the younger generation, and applies both to current and retired stars. The ban also includes any type of role models, social media influencers, entertainers, and even cartoon figures and symbols that are “likely to appeal to minors”.
On a more general level, the ban includes a requirement that any communications or advertising material that is related to online casinos in Canada cannot use themes or language that is intended to appeal primarily to minors. Moreover, no advertising of any kind can be displayed in the vicinity of schools or other locations that mostly target young people.
Concerns from the igaming industry
A number of online casinos in Canada, however, have expressed concerns over the strict ban, with some industry professionals warning that this could have a largely detrimental effect on the sector. Critics warned that the brunt of responsibility for the education of minors should be on the parents, who are best placed to exercise control over their offspring’s exposure to advertising that features any Canadian online casino.
Leading the charge against the new law is Gayle Mitchell, senior editor at Slotsonlinecanada.com, who went on record with The Sudbury Star as calling the new advertising ban “dangerous to the industry’s ongoing health”.
Rather than an outright ban, Mitchell suggested that a more tempered approach be adopted via measures like limiting channels where gambling adverts showcasing celebrities and athletes could be aired, as well as by introducing a time restriction of after 9 pm.
Moreover, critics argued, that online casinos in Canada have already implemented a vast range of responsible gambling controls intended precisely to ensure that the sites are only used by adults. The move has pushed gambling professionals like Steven Salz, founder of esports betting company Rivalry, to note that this only means operators will be pushed to be “more creative”. In a statement sent out to Canadian media, he acknowledged that the industry “historically relied heavily on celebrity and athlete endorsements”.
Other operators who have already been through a similar process in other jurisdictions also anticipated the need to adjust a substantial chunk of existing advertising material. William Woodhams, CEO of the British bookmaker Fitzdares, told media platform The Globe and Mail that, while the operator is facing the possibility of adjusting their advertising campaigns, they’re also asking AGCO for further clarifications about what is and isn’t allowed in relation to online casinos Canada advertising.
Ontario’s background in igaming
The celebrity ban is significant in light of the fact that Ontario was the first Canadian province to announce an open, regulated online gambling market for online casinos in Canada in April 2022. A legal infrastructure was created that made AGCO responsible for the granting of all iGaming licenses via its subsidiary iGaming Ontario.
All licensed operators must comply with a set of rules and regulations that are imposed by AGCO via its Standards for Internet Gaming regulations. These include anything related to gambling advertising and marketing.
Since the market opened, the sector has seen a massive increase in the total revenue from gaming for the province, with the Q2 revenue for 2023 increasing to $545 million, compared to $162 million throughout the same period the previous year.
This growth prompted critics like The Centre for Addictions and Mental Health, as well as other mental health advocates and Canada’s New Democratic Party to call for more stringent control over gambling advertising. As a result, AGCO launched a public consultation process in April 2023, with the results leading to the celebrity advertising ban.
Conclusion: How will this affect the best online casinos in Canada?
The precise impact – if any – that this ban is likely to have on online casino Canada sites remains to be seen. The online gambling industry is known for being extremely agile and adaptable to situations, and it’s very unlikely that industry leaders won’t find a way to circumnavigate this advertising ban. As gambling operators put their collective creative hats on, we eagerly await more developments to report.

Are more Canadian provinces going to open their iGaming markets
Ontario’s move to regulate its iGaming market in 2022 was a welcome development for players and Ontario online casinos. It boosted the trust between both parties, allowing players to wager on games more confidently because of the introduced accountability. Consequently, the total revenue for the market has exceeded $1 billion, with signs of doubling that amount in the coming months.
This exponential increase in revenue in one year has placed the Ontario iGaming market among the top five largest in North America. It is a report that shows dedication to providing safe gaming platforms to players in the country. Evidently, the iGaming market boasts over 1.6 million active player accounts with over 40 operators.
An IPSOS survey in March 2023 revealed that about 85% of online players and sports bettors placed wagers on regulated sites. That hints at the widespread acceptance and growing trust of online casinos and sportsbooks in the Ontario iGaming market. Nevertheless, the question falls back on the readiness of other Canadian provinces to open their iGaming markets and replicate Ontario’s success.
Online Gaming Market regulations in Ontario
Ontario took the giant step to regulate its iGaming market on April 4, 2022. As of June 2022, the industry boasted 31 online gaming websites and 18 operators. Together, they generated $4.096 billion in cash wagers and $162 million in revenue.
Active player accounts were at 492,000. Fast forward to today, and the number of casinos and sportsbooks on iGaming Ontario’s website will spoil you for choice. Growth has been phenomenal, with many more operators warming up to join the bubbling market.
Attorney General Doug Downey recognized the exponential growth of this competitive gaming model that displaced the former unregulated market. He reserved special praise for the executive director, Martha Otton, the board chair, and the team for the unwavering transformation. Besides gaming, the industry has created new jobs, attracted investments, and nipped capital flight in the bud.
While you digest that information, here are some statistics to expand on them:
- Active players spent approximately $70 monthly on average in the last year.
- The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) released a survey showing that 85% of players wagered on regulated sites in 2023. This was a survey of over 1,100 Ontarians – an improvement of over 70% wagers on unregulated markets before April 2022.
- Basketball took the lion’s share of all the wagers, gulping 28%. Soccer, football, hockey, and baseball followed with 15%, 14%, 9%, and 8%. Also, these figures represent the sports bets placed on regulated sportsbooks.
- Slots took the lead in the casino sector, taking 48% of all casino wagers. Live dealer table games came second with a third of the bets (32%), while the computer-controlled variants took 19%.
These statistics are enough to make those in the leading roles proud and other provinces envious. The Ontario iGaming market’s achievements in revenue and monthly active players are laudable. It is undoubtedly on the right path compared to other states’ regulated online gaming adoptions.
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has certified over 5,000 casino games. That number is in addition to those from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLGC). Furthermore, the latter is responsible for the province’s online sports betting products and Proline retail.
Let’s compare the Ontario iGaming market to others in North America. New Jersey, with a more mature online casino and sports betting industry, generated $2.39 billion in 2022. That is more than double what Ontario generated in the same period.
However, the province came close to matching Pennsylvania’s record for the year, falling 20% short of the latter’s $1.76 billion in revenue. Most markets in North America have been around for much longer. Notwithstanding, Ontario has shown remarkable progress in its one-year existence.
Will other provinces follow in Ontario’s footsteps
Ontario is undoubtedly on the fast track to becoming an iGaming stronghold in North America and the world. It has seen remarkable and amicable progress since regulating its gaming industry in April 2022. More online players have turned to regulated casinos and sportsbooks, ditching unregulated platforms.
Things were different before April 2022, with unregulated casinos and sportsbooks taking 70% of wagers. Now, approximately 85% of players prefer regulated platforms over unregulated ones. Dave Phillips, the AGCO Chief Operating Officer, labeled the growth a substantial shift from what the province has known.
Despite Ontario’s remarkable growth since regulating its iGaming market, questions remain about other provinces’ willingness to do so. Such giant strides in a short time hardly go unnoticed.
Operators are satisfied with the achievements in this province. However, they do not mind expanding to others, provided they take active steps like Ontario did.
The CGA event pushed some optimism into the air, signaling the willingness of other provinces to regulate their iGaming markets. Benjie Levy sees no reason for regions to ignore the brilliant work done in Ontario. The head of PENN Interactive and theScore’s chief operating officer is optimistic about having at least one province follow the trend.
Let’s wrap up with a few tips to keep close to your heart when registering with a new casino. First, ensure the site holds a license from the province’s regulatory bodies. It can be the Alcohol and Gaming Commission or iGaming Ontario.
Then, you can review other features like bonuses, games, Casino payment options, and the user interface. Avoid any unnecessary compromise, especially in the quality. It is one thing to play on a regulated platform, and another to enjoy the gameplay and usability.
Casino Class 101: What sets the top Ontario Casinos apart
The online gambling laws and regulations in Canada have always been confusing, and most Canadian players don’t know the exact rules and regulations. Gambling laws differ across the various Canadian provinces, and in some provinces, online gambling is legal, but only through offshore accounts and not directly through Canadian betting operators.
Ontario is the largest and most populated Canadian province, and until last year online gambling for Ontario residents was illegal. All that changed in April 2022 when Ontario introduced its new online casino regulations. With the updated regulations, online gambling, particularly online sports betting and playing at online casinos, became legal activities for Ontario residents. At Minimum Deposits Casinos, we make life easier for visitors to our site, and there are plenty of sources of information covering the online casino industry. Ontario players who want to learn more about online gambling in the province can visit our Ontario Casino page to find the best Ontario casinos.
Below is an insight into iGaming Ontario, from its history to its progress in the industry, and we will also review three Ontario casinos that you should try out. Some of the features of each casino will also be discussed.
iGaming Ontario controls online casinos in Ontario
April 4th 2022, marked the beginning of a new chapter in the online gambling industry in Canada, particularly in Ontario. A partnership was created between iGaming Ontario, the Government of Ontario and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) to establish a new online gaming market that protects Ontario players and betting operators. Through this partnership, new laws and regulations were drawn up to legalise online gambling in the province.
iGaming Ontario controls the online Ontario gambling market, and all Ontario casinos and sportsbooks must be registered with them before they can launch their betting products to Ontario players.
With these new regulations, all Ontario casinos are wholly different to its sister casinos that may be available throughout the rest of Canada. Each Ontario casino is licensed and regulated by iGaming Ontario, and Ontario players will notice an iGaming Ontario logo on these casino websites. Ontario casinos are only allowed to accept players from Ontario, and no players from other Canadian provinces can place bets or play casino games.
iGaming Ontario has exceptionally promoted itself and online gambling in the province. Numerous information sources and advertisements highlight the Ontario gambling market’s progress over the past year. April 2023 marks the first anniversary since online gambling was legalised in the province. The latest figures from iGaming Ontario show that there has been approximately $1.4 billion in total gaming revenue, thus placing Ontario in the top five gambling jurisdictions in North America. Over 1.6 million active player accounts and more than 40 betting operators exist. With over 40+ betting operators, Ontario players have plenty of options for their online gambling destination, and below are three Ontario casinos that Ontario players should consider signing up with.
Play on Megamoolah slots at Jackpot City Ontario
Jackpot City Casino is a stalwart in the online gambling industry and has existed since 1998. Jackpot City entered the Ontario market last year and is a licensed Ontario casino. Jackpot City is a longtime favourite among many players, and Ontario players have access to over 400 casino games ranging from slots to table games and an immersive mobile casino. The casino’s bold design immediately stands out with its nightlife city background.
Our Jackpot City Casino Review informed us that new Ontario players could claim a lucrative welcome bonus that covers their first four deposits at the casino. Players can earn up to $1600 in a match bonus. The minimum deposit to claim the bonus is $10, which comes with 70x wagering requirements.
Ontario players who sign up at Jackpot City can enjoy the best games in the industry from software providers like NetEnt and Microgaming. One of the most popular casino slot games is Mega Moolah, a creation of Microgaming. Mega Moolah is considered in the top three video slot games and is an exciting progressive jackpot game. There are plenty of variations of Mega Moolah, including Mega Moolah Isis and Juicy Joker Mega Moolah. Mega Moolah is a low-volatility slot game with an average Rate to Player (RTP) of 88%, but with the bonus feature and free spins triggers, the RTP jumps to around 96%. With a high RTP and the possibility of big wins, it is no wonder Mega Moolah is so popular among players.

Changes coming to BetVictor as they take on Canada
Renowned European betting operator BetVictor has announced a rebranding of its corporate identity and will now be known as BVGroup. BetVictor, a household name players are familiar with, has seen tremendous growth in the Canadian market over the past 12 months thanks to the great work by the Alcohol and Gambling Commission of Ontario (AGCO) and iGaming Ontario. Through AGCO and iGaming Ontario, online betting was legalized and over the past year there has been a steady growth of online casinos Canada and licensed casino and sportsbooks in Ontario.
BetVictor has quickly gained a large share of Ontario’s market through its excellent betting products and abundance of bonuses and promotions.
Why rebranding is important
The rebrand took place earlier in June and as with any transformation, there are many questions that arise. Why did Betvictor rebrand? What happens going forward? What does this mean for Canadian players?
We have collected all the information and put them together for you. Below we outline these and provide insights behind the rebrand with comments from Andreas Meinrad, the CEO of BVGroup.
The major changes with the rebrand includes the logo and website updates reflecting the new brand name. However, all operations remain the same for now, and the only change is the refreshed image. The rebranding is a natural step and adjustment to the growing market requirements and a way to refresh the company’s image and expand its clientele.
Andreas Meinrad, CEO of BVGroup, was quoted in recent media reports as saying: “During our 75+ years in business, we have established ourselves as one of the most reputable gambling companies in the world. Our new identity, BVGroup, helps us define ourselves more effectively, highlighting how far the company has come from its bookmaker beginnings.’’

Some of the existing global partnerships BetVictor has with various organizations include its sponsorship with the World Snooker Tour (WST) and talkSPORT BET. One of the main reasons BetVictor has been able to claim a share of the Canadian betting market is its sports betting partnership with the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL).
