Philippines Launches 24/7 Helpline for Problem Gambling Support
If you or someone you know is struggling with gambling, help is now more accessible than ever in the Philippines. The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) has introduced a National Problem Gambling Helpline (NPGH), a crucial resource available around the clock.
Continuous Support When You Need It Most
This new helpline, reachable at 02-8248-9568, connects callers directly with trained counselors who can provide confidential assistance. It’s a significant step forward in ensuring that individuals and families affected by gambling-related issues have immediate access to support.
A Partnership for Well-being
The NPGH isn’t operating alone. PAGCOR has partnered with the Seagulls Flock Organization Inc. (SFO), an organization bringing valuable expertise in mental health, addiction treatment, and behavioral wellness. This collaboration ensures that the support offered is comprehensive and evidence-based. PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Alejandro H. Tengco emphasized that the helpline is designed to assist not only those experiencing gambling harm but also their loved ones. He pointed out that while gaming can be a source of entertainment for many, it can unfortunately lead to serious financial difficulties, emotional distress, damaged relationships, and social isolation for others.
Commitment to Responsible Gaming
The launch of this 24/7 helpline underscores PAGCOR’s dedication to maintaining a gaming industry that is productive, well-governed, humane, and accountable. This initiative is a clear reflection of their commitment to safeguarding player welfare and promoting responsible gaming practices. The NPGH team is comprised of para-counselors and mental health professionals who are extensively trained to offer immediate support, psychological guidance, and referrals to specialized treatment programs. They operate with structured protocols to effectively manage crisis situations and provide ongoing assistance.
Dedicated Professionals Ready to Help
Before the official launch, the para-counselors underwent rigorous training, covering essential skills like motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and effective call handling strategies for managing distressed callers. Currently, 12 para-counselors are working in shifts to ensure the helpline is available 24 hours a day, with plans to expand the team as needed.
More Than Just a Helpline
PAGCOR views this helpline as a vital component of both regulatory responsibility and compassionate care. They believe that addressing problem gambling effectively requires both strong governance and empathetic support. By connecting individuals with skilled mental health professionals, the helpline aims to offer practical advice, assess needs, and implement structured interventions for those impacted by gambling. Beyond the new helpline, PAGCOR continues to offer support through its existing programs and resources, ensuring that players and their families have multiple avenues for assistance. This comprehensive approach highlights PAGCOR’s role in prioritizing player protection and social responsibility within the gambling industry.
