Influencers Beware: The Truth About Australian Gambling Promotion Online

Ever scrolled through social media and seen someone showcasing a big win at the casino or a flashy betting app? It looks fun, right? But what if that seemingly harmless post is actually breaking the law and downplaying some serious risks? That’s the reality the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) is shining a spotlight on, and it’s something we all need to be aware of.

What’s the Big Deal About Influencer Posts?

The VGCCC is sending a clear message: promoting gambling, especially by showing off winnings or big prizes, can be harmful. It’s not just about what you see; it’s about how it shapes our perception of gambling. The reality is that games like poker machines and sports betting come with significant risks of harm, and social media often completely glosses over that.

The Law and Online Gambling Promotion

Here’s where it gets serious. Under Victoria’s Gambling Regulation Act 2003, it’s actually illegal to advertise or promote poker machines. This means that if an influencer posts about playing them, visiting a casino, or even sharing their wins, they could be breaking the law. The VGCCC is actively watching, and individuals found in breach could face hefty fines, up to AU$24,421.

Targeting Young Adults

A major concern is how these posts affect young adults, particularly those aged 18 to 24. Influencers are often seen as role models, and when they present gambling as easy money or just a bit of fun, it can lead younger people to believe there are no risks involved. This can be a slippery slope, potentially leading to gambling without fully understanding the potential negative consequences.

Normalizing the Risk

Research has confirmed that the constant stream of gambling content online is helping to normalize it, especially for young people. This normalization can encourage riskier behaviour once they start engaging with gambling, whether it’s at a venue or through an app. It’s important to remember that in Victoria alone, player losses hit a staggering AU$3.14 billion last financial year – a figure rarely, if ever, mentioned in those glossy influencer posts.

What About Licensed Venues?

It’s not just influencers being warned. Licensed gambling venues are also being reminded that they can’t advertise poker machines outside their gaming areas. They’re also being encouraged to implement clear entry rules, like prohibiting filming inside gaming rooms. This is all part of creating a safer environment.

Enforcement and Accountability

The VGCCC isn’t just talking; they’re acting. We’ve seen significant fines issued for breaches of responsible gambling rules, including penalties for promoting to people who have chosen to exclude themselves from gambling. This highlights the commitment to harm minimization and respecting people’s decisions.

Why This Matters to You

Understanding these regulations and the VGCCC’s stance is crucial for all of us. It means we can be more critical of the content we consume and recognize when we’re being shown a skewed version of reality. It’s about making informed choices and being aware of the real risks involved, rather than just the glittering facade.
