Always look into details since some payment service providers can impose additional costs. Choosing the right method assures that financial transactions will be uncomplicated and risk-free.
Games You Can Play at Bing Bong
While the factors mentioned earlier certainly play a significant role, the heart of the online gaming experience lies in the game selection. At Bing Bong Casino, it’s not just about winning; it’s about deriving genuine enjoyment from the world of online gambling.
Given its German license, Bing Bong Casino focuses predominantly on slot machines, excluding table games and a live casino due to legal constraints. However, this limitation doesn’t imply a lackluster selection. On the contrary, the array of themes and game types on offer ensures that monotony is out of the question.
This $/€1 deposit casino proudly features an extensive range from reputable developers, including Merkur and Novoline, stalwarts in the industry. Play ‘N’ Go also contributes to the diverse offering.

This means you’ll find classics like Book of Ra alongside new, action-packed slots like Blazing Star. Moreover, slot enthusiasts can also capitalize on enticing bonus offers, providing a wide selection that promises both enjoyment and the potential for substantial wins. Gamlinked May 2024
By Thadeus Geodfrey
Welcome to Gamlinked, where we have our finger on the pulse of the gambling industry. We capture the highs, lows, and everything in between, ensuring you’re up to date with industry developments, including the latest trends in top online casinos.
In this issue, we look at Ontario where the regulator raises concerns over World Boxing Association (WBA)-sanctioned boxing matches and potential match-fixing. Then, we discuss Westpac NZ’s new gambling block and GambleAware’s self-assessment tool. In South Africa, a political party is eyeing a gambling bill ahead of the election.
In the UK, the gambling lobby group UK Betting and Gaming Council is in senior leadership restructure. We close the roundup in Indonesia where there’s an impending crackdown on online gambling sites. Let’s look at these developments in detail.
Ontario Regulator Suspends Betting on Boxing Matches
There’s no betting on boxing matches in Ontario, according to the regulator, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). It believes World Boxing Association (WBA)-sanctioned matches are too open to manipulation. The Canadian Press reports that the province worries about the risks of match-fixing and insider betting on these boxing matches. As a result, AGCO has asked all registered gaming operators, among them the best online casinos, to stop accepting wagers on WBA events till further notice.
But what has formed this decision? AGCO says they have reviewed the bets on a title fight between Yoenis Tellez and Livan Navarro held in Florida in December and identified suspicious patterns. An Ontario-registered iGaming operator and two independent integrity monitors detected suspicious bet patterns.
Some media reports allege that Tellez’s manager had placed a $110,000 bet that the match would last longer than 5 1/2 rounds.
While AGCO concluded that WBA events don’t meet the Registrar’s Standards for Internet Gaming, they’ve left room to reinstate the events should the regulated operators and online casinos demonstrate the WBA effectively supervises these events.
Perhaps the WBA can borrow a leaf from the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). In December last year, AGCO had asked operators to stop offering bets on UFC events over similar concerns. But the UFC moved with speed to implement new protocols and within a month of the sanction, AGCO had reinstated UFC betting in the province. So, if WBA works cooperatively with AGCO, the matter can be resolved just as quickly.
“We don’t take this kind of action very often,” Registrar and CEO Karin Schnarr was quoted as telling media.
”And so when we do, it really, I think [it] signals the seriousness of this kind of situation,”
Schnarr said AGCO regulates and wants an open gaming market in the province where gamers can trust that the sports games offered by the registered operators are fair for betting.
But will AGCO also take action against the National Basketball Association (NBA) like it did UFC and now WBA?
The 30-team professional basketball league in North America has recently declared a lifetime ban for Jontay Porter, a former Toronto Raptors backup centre following an inquiry into gambling accusations. The investigation revealed that he shared confidential information with sports bettors, manipulating his participation in games for betting reasons, and placing bets on NBA matches. These actions breached league regulations.
In a follow-up statement to the event, Schnarr acknowledged the action taken by the NBA, saying the prompt and decisive action on a serious case of alleged insider betting and match-fixing demonstrated how seriously they take matters related to game integrity.
Schnarr, who is a Laurier Associate Professor, insists that all the registered operators in Ontario must ensure the games they provide are effectively supervised by a sports governing body. These sports bodies have to have and enforce codes of conduct prohibiting betting by insiders.
On the current ban on WBA-sanctioned boxing matches, she said the action by the NBA sharply contrasts those by the WBA, as the latter’s Code of Ethics does not explicitly prohibit betting by insiders. She also added that no evidence demonstrates any effort to curb such fraudulent incidents in the boxing match. WBA has made no effort to the required action concerning the Yoenis Tellez and Livan Navarro fight betting incidents.
If WBA-sanctioned fights lack betting safeguards, would you still trust even the best Canadian online casino to predict Mike Tyson’s retirement bout against Jake Paul?
New Zealand Banks Introduce Credit Card Blocks to Mitigate Gambling
New Zealand financial institution Westpac has introduced a new system to help gambling addiction. Their new online banking account can block debit and credit cards for gambling payments.
“By introducing the gambling block, we’re empowering our customers to stay in control of their finances,” Louisa Brock, Westpac NZ Manager of Financial Inclusion and Vulnerability reportedly told media. “ We know gambling can become an addiction for some people, at which point it can cause significant harm.”
Ms Brock, who leads the bank’s Extra Care team, says customers have been asking for this optional block.
Well, how does this Westpac account block work?
Westpac customers can request a gambling block by calling the bank or visiting the nearest branch to apply the block to all their credit/debit cards. The block stops any online transaction with gambling businesses. And it stays in place for at least three months before you can request the bank to remove it
However, brick-and-mortar players are excluded from this feature. The company targets online transactions, so the block won’t stop transactions at physical locations like a casino or retail outfit selling a lottery ticket.
While supporting their move to only offer gambling blocks for NZ online casinos and gambling platforms, Westpac says its customers spent $136.8 million between 26 June and 25 September 2023 on online gambling. That’s over 40 times what their customers spent at physical gambling locations, which stands at $3.2m, over the same period.
Also, an interesting stat is that nearly $68.4 million of the money spent online went to TAB and Lotto, and the remainder spread across various online gambling platforms.
“Our data shows that the majority of gambling spending does take place online.” Ms Brock says. “We’ve updated our website to let customers know that the block’s available if they’re looking for support with a gambling problem.”
In explaining how account blocks can help, she recounted a story of a customer, who had received an inheritance payment exceeding $100,000. The customer proceeded to gamble more than $15,000 online in 12 days. Ms. Brock states that when the customer was informed about the option of implementing an account block to assist in managing their spending, they eagerly embraced the opportunity.
This customer conveyed to the team at Westpac that they were eager to cease gambling but found it challenging to do so independently.
According to data on responsible gambling from Te Whatu Ora, the government organization tasked with promoting health and wellness among New Zealanders, an estimated 186,000 individuals experience gambling-related harm in the country.
Brock emphasizes the courage required to acknowledge one’s gambling problem. She mentioned that Westpac has trained its customer-facing staff to engage in constructive dialogues with customers. Such customers experiencing gambling difficulties can quickly be identified and assisted in structuring their accounts to control gambling expenditures.
GambleAware Reports Over 100,000 People using its self-assessment tool
In other news, the latest data shows GambleAware initiatives are successfully working. More people are using the tools to prevent gambling-related harm.
GambleAware says in its report that more than 100,000 individuals have used its online self-assessment tool since its launch in April 2023. Among them, approximately 28,000 sought further support from trained advisors, indicating a substantial demand for assistance in managing gambling-related issues.
GambleAware is an independent charity aimed at preventing gambling harm through research, and development of prevention tools and treatment services across the UK. It recently rebuffed its campaign to help more people open up, with the slogan ‘Let’s Open Up About Gambling!’
Through its coordinated efforts to cut barriers to accessing support and treatment services, over 50% of those affected are taking proactive steps to prevent gambling harm. To keep up with the growing numbers, the charity has trained more than 8,000 professionals drawn from other sectors to be part of the team to identify signs of gambling harm.
The report further says there has been a notable increase in individuals accessing support through the GambleAware-commissioned National Gambling Support Network (NGSN). Precisely, there’s a 20% rise in people receiving extended early intervention support.
The GambleAware-commissioned National Gambling Helpline has also seen an increase in calls it receives. The uptake of prevention initiatives corresponds with the surge in the number of new online casinos and the gaming industry’s revenues. With more people engaging in betting activities, there’s an urgency to address gambling harms within society as demonstrated by the growing demand for assistance.
Zoë Osmond, CEO of GambleAware, stressed the critical role of third-sector services in addressing gambling harms, advocating for a comprehensive prevention-led approach.
While explaining the increase in demand for assistance, GambleAware credited its stigma campaign, ‘Let’s Open Up About Gambling,’ for playing a significant role in reducing barriers to accessing support and promoting prevention efforts.
With more than half of the target audience responding by taking proactive steps to address gambling-related concerns, Alexia Clifford, Chief Communications Officer at GambleAware, highlighted the positive impact of the campaign.
Laura Mallis, Project Coordinator for Citizens Advice Scotland Gambling Support Service, on her part, expressed gratitude for the partnership with GambleAware. She emphasized the transformative impact of training and upskilling advisers and volunteers to recognize and address gambling harms effectively.
Well, GambleAware remains committed to combating gambling harm. Other than encouraging responsible gambling, what further actions do you believe are necessary to effectively address this issue?
South African Political Party Announces Online Gambling Bill Ahead of Election
The Democratic Alliance (DA) believes the ANC has failed to provide adequate protection and regulation within the online gambling industry. In response, through its MP Dean Macpherson, the party has officially introduced its Remote Gambling Bill 2024 in Parliament.
In a press release, the MP said the gambling bill has taken more than two years of consultation with industry experts. If successfully passed, the bill will revise the National Gambling Amendment Act 2008.
The bill, which complies with the Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA) – the main Anti-Money Laundering (AML) law of South Africa, seeks to regulate the issuing of licenses by provincial authorities, control advertising, and protect minors and vulnerable persons. The legislator says the bill balances protection and regulation with administration.
With the upcoming national and provincial elections potentially reducing the ANC’s majority, the DA sees an opportunity to pass legislation like the Remote Gambling Bill to address critical issues and protect vulnerable populations.
UK Betting and Gaming Council Undergoes Restructure of Senior Leadership
The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) announced Grainne Hurst as its new Chief Executive Officer, succeeding Michael Dugher, who in turn will replace outgoing board chair Brigid Simmonds. This is part of a broader restructuring of the lobby group’s senior leadership.
“As I step back to become Chair of the BGC,” said Michael Dugher, “I am confident she will work well with our talented staff to make a decisive impact as our new CEO.”
“Driving further progress on safer gambling, whilst ensuring that the tens of thousands of people who work in the industry continue to have their voices heard, will remain at the heart of everything we do,” added Dugher.
According to Dugher, there is no one better than Grainne. So, her appointment was excellent news for BGC and its members. He noted that she had won a very tough, external recruitment process. She had demonstrated that she possessed mission-critical knowledge and experience in the regulated industry, both online and in the land-based sector. Additionally, Dugher highlighted Grainne’s strong vision for continued change and improvement at the BGC.
Grainne is experienced in the regulated betting and gaming sector, currently working as the global betting brand Entain, Group Corporate Affairs Director. Her particular achievement in this role is leading the company’s engagement with the government and overseeing the development of a global safer gambling strategy.
Grainne’s experience comes in handy in promoting responsible gambling and increasing diversity within the industry. With her leadership, the BGC aims to engage constructively with regulators and stakeholders as they continue to champion the industry employees and provide the best possible service to customers.
Her appointment comes at a crucial time as the industry navigates regulatory changes and implements recommendations from the White Paper from a year ago.
The BGC is a lobby group made up of more than 90 per cent of the UK’s regulated betting and gaming sector. Its member companies employ more than 110,000 workers, contribute £4.2 billion in tax revenue, and add £7.1 billion to the economy in gross value.
Indonesian Government Moves to Eradicate Online Gambling Sites
In a decisive move against online gambling, the central government of Indonesia has announced the formation of a multi-agency task force. This task force aims to eradicate online gambling nationwide.
The creation of this task force marks a significant step in the country’s ongoing battle against online gambling, an activity that remains entirely illegal across the nation. They want to remove all online casinos that are operating.
The task force consists of representatives from various government agencies, including the Financial Services Authority (OJK), the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK), and the police.
Recent data from the Center for Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis (PPATK) revealed that the total circulation of money from online gambling in 2023 amounted to Rp327 trillion (approximately US$20.19 billion). Concerningly, there are many low-deposit casinos targeting individuals from low-income backgrounds.
Mahendra Siregar, Chair of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority (OJK), disclosed that the OJK has already blocked around 5,000 bank accounts associated with online gambling activities between late 2023 and March 2024. However, he acknowledged that merely eliminating sites and blocking bank accounts may not be sufficient to completely eradicate online gambling, as it is a transnational issue.
Siregar called for comprehensive eradication efforts, considering that some online gambling activities occur across borders and may not involve bank accounts. He emphasized the importance of addressing the root problem to ensure effective solutions.
The formation of the integrated task force reflects the government’s commitment to tackling the widespread issue of online gambling and protecting vulnerable individuals from its harmful effects.
Closing Thoughts
That is a lot of news in the industry, so it’s a wrap from us for now. But don’t worry, we will keep you updated regularly on everything you need to know in the gambling sector.
New Hub for Gambling Research Launched in the UK
By Daniela Rose
A new research hub ‘NatCen’ has been launched in the UK to tackle urgent gambling-related issues. This will be for land-based and UK online casinos. This hub will be led by respected figures in health and social research such as Sokratis Dinos and Mari Toomse-Smith, who are both Directors of Health. According to a report by Gambling Insider, this facility will operate to inform and shape gambling policies.
The hub will collaborate with industry regulators, treatment providers, and the public and aims to study the prevalence of gambling. It also wants to increase public awareness of behaviours and risk factors linked to gambling harm.
Guy Goodwin, NatCen’s Chief Executive, is quoted in the report as saying: “Our researchers are also experts with experience in researching stigma with gambling and more across a range of research methods. This is an important policy area that we continue to work to understand better.”
Additionally, he emphasized that NatCen’s team of researchers possess diverse skill sets covering mixed-methods expertise, analysis of gaps in gambling treatment, prevalence studies, attitudes toward gambling, and evaluation of intervention strategies.
Background of Gambling in the UK
Gambling has been ingrained in the UK’s culture for centuries, yet its journey has been far from simple. Starting with primitive bets and societal disapproval, gambling at UK online casinos has undergone significant evolution.
In the 21st century, the advent of online betting platforms has revolutionized the gambling landscape. Regulatory efforts, like the Gambling Act of 2005 and the establishment of the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC), is aimed at safeguarding players and addressing emerging challenges in online gambling. However, hurdles such as tax issues and online advertising regulation persist.
In April 2023, the UK Government unveiled the Gambling Act Policy Paper Review, proposing key reforms. These include bolstering resources for regulators, improving responsible gambling protection and financial checks, revisiting design standards for online products, and establishing an independent ombudsperson for consumer disputes.
However, the UK gambling sector has undergone its most substantial regulatory overhaul since 2005. The government’s reforms aim to tighten regulations, mainly focusing on the best online casinos UK. These changes are vital as they address the rapid evolution of betting markets over the past 18 years, including innovations like live betting, customizable bets, and peer-to-peer platforms.
However, existing regulations have yet to keep pace with these advancements, making adjustments necessary to ensure compliance. Since 2017, the UKGC has increased its oversight, subjecting operators to greater scrutiny.
Operators must adapt swiftly to these regulatory changes to effectively manage financial pressures. Online Casinos UK have to promptly update their anti-money laundering and safer gambling protocols to align with anticipated regulatory measures by the summer of 2024.
Some operators have already felt the financial impact due to the proactive adoption of stricter controls, affecting revenues derived from the UK and investor confidence. Notably, approximately 15 million individuals engage in gambling activities under the Gambling Act 2005 in Great Britain, a figure comparable to annual visits to museums or galleries, according to the Government’s Participation Survey 2021 to 2022 report.
Gambling Research in the UK
Gambling is prevalent in the UK, with nearly half of the population engaging in gambling activities at least once between the year leading up to March 2023. Despite increasing awareness of gambling addiction in the UK, many underestimate the severity of this issue. For many Brits, gambling is seen as harmless entertainment – a social activity akin to going out for drinks or playing sports with friends.
Problem gambling is a severe condition that affects the brain similarly to other addictions like drugs or alcohol. It revolves around the brain’s reward system, which associates gambling with positive experiences and releases feel-good chemicals during play.
While not everyone is at risk of developing a gambling addiction, research suggests that 1.4 million people in the UK are susceptible to such problems. UK adults collectively spent approximately £3.3 billion on betting and gaming during the same period. Individuals aged 20-24 are particularly vulnerable to developing gambling problems.
According to the UKGC, there are an estimated 168,149 problem gamblers in the UK, representing a 50% increase from 2022. Online gambling participation among Brits stands at 26%, with monthly engagement in gambling activities witnessing a nearly 80% increase between 2020 and 2023.
While these figures are believed to be overestimates, the actual scope of the issue may be more severe than official statistics suggest, especially considering that approximately 1.4 million Brits are at some level of risk from gambling-related harm.
The Future of Safer Gambling in the UK
Millions of people engage in gambling activities annually at land-based and best UK online casinos, whether it’s wagering on horse races, playing at casinos, or placing bets on football matches. Much of this activity has shifted to smartphones due to advancements in technology. With mobile virtual casinos accessible anytime, people can now bet around the clock directly from their pockets.
According to the GOV.UK, the government is proposing updates to betting regulations tailored to the digital era to address the risks associated with gambling. Some of these proposals include limiting the amount players can bet on online slots, instituting new player protection measures, and taxing betting companies to pay for addiction treatment.
- Statutory Gambling Operator Levy: The Gambling Commission will collect this levy, and the government will sanction its expenditure. The levy rate will be subject to further consultation, considering factors like business size, operating expenses, and problem gambling rates. The government’s main objective is to ensure there’s adequate long-term funding for high-quality research and treatment of gambling-related addiction.
- New Online Stake Limit: A new stake limit for online slots will be implemented, with the default maximum stake ranging between £2 and £15 per spin, pending consultation. This measure aims to prevent excessive and life-altering losses and create a level playing field between online and land-based casinos. Currently, online slots have no betting limit, while physical slot machines in pubs, arcades, and bookmakers are capped at £2, and casinos have limits of up to £5.
- Player Protection Checks: Betting companies must conduct seamless player protection checks on high-spending gamblers to ensure they’re not experiencing harmful losses. These checks will occur instantly and won’t disrupt gameplay, except in cases of financial harm, such as bankruptcy or accumulating debts to fund gambling.
- New Powers for the Gambling Commission: The Gambling Commission will receive new authority to combat and block unlicensed black market gambling operators in the UK. It will use court orders and collaborate with internet service providers (ISPs) to enforce these measures.
- Restricting Bonus Offers: Bonus offers, like free bets or spins, can incentivize harmful behaviour and encourage excessive spending. The Gambling Commission will scrutinize how bonuses are structured and targeted to prevent misuse, leading to new regulations to curtail dangerous practices.
- Horseracing Levy: The gambling White Paper’s impact on the horseracing industry is expected to be minimal. However, there will be a review of the current horserace betting levy to ensure adequate funding for racing in the future.
Estimates indicate that there are around 300,000 problem gamblers in the UK, with higher rates of problem gambling observed among players of casino games compared to those in bingo halls, casinos, and pubs.
While operators are already mandated to ensure responsible gambling and prevent harm, there have been numerous cases where they have permitted losses that exceed what most people could reasonably afford. The newly proposed measures aim to protect players struggling with addiction from harm and ensure that online casinos are held accountable for their failures in meeting their responsibilities.
Avoid The Disappointments Of The Great Canadian Casino Resort At These Online Casinos
There is so much to expect from a billion-dollar gambling facility. Unfortunately, it is difficult to tell that around $1 billion was spent on the Great Canadian Casino Resort considering this is the biggest gambling facility in Canada. With such an investment, you would expect the property to embody opulence and grandeur. It should be a luxurious and extravagant gambling haven.
Sitting on 33 acres, the Great Canadian Casino Resort has 4800 slot machines and 145 table games. That’s where the good things end. For starters, the place doesn’t feel like a casino yet.
Several other things will make you disappointed with the casino. These include:
Overwhelming size: The sheer size of the Great Canadian Casino Resort makes it difficult to navigate and find your preferred game.
Lengthy registration: There is no online registration. You must go to register in person at the casino and wait a few hours before you get a seat, especially at a poker table seat. If there was an online registration option, it would have been ideal. But unfortunately, it does not have this.
Inexperienced dealers: Another disappointing element is new inexperienced dealers. There are some that understand the game rules but most are not yet there.
10% rake: The usual rake at casinos is 2.5% to 10%. At the Great Canadian Casino Resort, the rake is 10% up to $20, which is a little high according to most players.
Substandard customer service: With such a large premises and high visitor traffic, it is difficult to get personalized customer support, leaving you feeling neglected.
High table limits: You might not like the table limit ranging from $50-$100 on the lower side. This is pretty high considering you can get a much lower table limit at online casinos.
Online Canadian casinos are better alternatives
Playing casino games shouldn’t be stressful. You should be able to find your favourite game conveniently, enjoy personalized customer support, wager within your limits, and generally have an exciting experience.

Why there are so many adverts for casinos in South Africa?
Gambling is popular globally and has through the ingenuity and innovation of local operators become a massive industry in South Africa with numerous land-based and licensed online casinos. Statistics indicate that around 10% of South Africans partake in regular gambling activities, of which the vast majority play the National Lottery.
South Africa has become one of the most attractive gambling markets, which is also the motivation behind the increasing number of South Africa Online Casinos. Statistics show a massive increase in casino gaming and sports betting, especially among online players.
As a result, the number of casino adverts in South Africa has skyrocketed over the past few years as the industry continues to take shape. These adverts come in the form of huge highway billboards, flyers, printed brochures, advertorials in newspapers, online banners, and even mobile-specific adverts.
Data shows that land-based casinos remain the most preferred option for South African players, while slot machines contribute around 76% to the overall revenue. According to information from the National Gambling Board, the betting market in 2020 amounted to R32.7 billion, with the SA Government raising R3.2 billion in levies and taxes. With a growth of 48% over the period since 2021, it has resulted in a R34.43 billion in gross gambling revenue for 2022.
Gambling and Advertising Regulators in South Africa
Gambling became legal in South Africa with the passage of the National Gambling Act in 1996. Since 2004, the National Gambling Policy Council has maintained policy consistency in both national and provincial governments. In addition, each of the nine provinces in South Africa has a gambling and racing board that has the authority to consider licenses and oversee operators according to provincial gambling laws, which include the following.
- Gauteng Gambling Board – Gauteng Gambling Act 4 of 1995, as amended.
- Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board – Western Cape Gambling and Racing Law 4 of 1996.
- Eastern Cape Gambling Board – Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Act 5 of 1997.
- Free State Gambling and Liquor Authority – Free State Gambling and Racing Act 6 of 1996.
- Kwa-Zulu-Natal Gaming & Gambling Board – KwaZulu-Natal Gambling Act 10 of 1996.
- Mpumalanga Economic Regulator – Mpumalanga Gambling Act 5 of 1995.
- North West Gambling Board – North West Casino, Gaming and Betting Act 13 of 1994.
- Limpopo Gambling Board – Northern Province Casino and Gaming Act 4 of 1996.
- Northern Cape Gambling Board – Northern Cape Gambling and Racing Act 5 of 1996
The National Gambling ACT 7 of 2004 include gambling advertising and promotion restrictions, although these state that 10% of a billboard surface should encourage responsible gambling.
Billboard adverts are all over South African Highways
South African online casinos harness the immeasurable power of outdoor advertising, and the growing traffic congestion continues to add to the benefits of billboard marketing. The number of billboards in the country is 13,500 and digital roadside billboards increased by 62% over a period of two years. One of the main motivators behind billboards is that advertisers reach an estimated 93% of South Africans weekly, confirming the effectiveness of utilizing it as a communication channel. The growth in the outdoor advertising market is a clear indication of more and more companies including gambling operators competing. In 2020, it was worth R4,09 billion and it is expected to rise by 2025 to R5.8 billion.
In terms of measuring the success of online gambling and other billboard adverts in South Africa, the Outdoor Measure Council states that billboards according to a study can be recalled by 98% of respondents, and 71% can recall a specific advertisement. Measuring conversion rate success, 48% revealed being motivated to act after noticing outdoor billboards, which confirms the huge influence on adult consumer behaviour.
The number of brands competing for the attention of South Africans continues to increase which includes the online casino marketing. Unfortunately, these don’t provide the necessary information to ensure everyone makes a wise decision. MinimumDepositCasinos not only promote licensed and regulated South African casinos but also negotiates exclusive offers to ensure players enjoy the maximum bonus benefits.
Google ads for casinos have become super annoying
There’s been an upsurge in users moving away from Google search due to the huge increase in annoying advertising. Most feel that casino reviews are secretly nothing more than paid ads and these create misaligned incentives to the search engine. It is surprising that Google managed for such a long period of time to maintain balance. It could be because many individuals still continue using it. What is most frustrating is the increase in results that don’t meet the exact search but rather promote bigger brands. As a result, our phones and other devices are constantly invaded by casino adverts, forums, and blog posts, making sense as to why so many users use add blocks.
MinimumDepositCasinos helps to cut down the noise by offering South Africans first-hand reviews to ensure players are well-informed of reputable and licensed casino brands they can trust. Our ZA casino reviews focus on providing information that matters most during the decision-making stage. This includes confirmed legality, security, fairness, the real value of bonuses, payment methods, payout speeds, and customer services. These are not paid for by the brands. Instead our experts register with each casino, deposit, play, test support, and withdraw, to confirm all validity and information we share with South African players.
Casinos adverts have infected our TV’s
Understandably, advertisers aim for a positive emotion. Their goal is to etch their marketing message in the mind of viewers. However, the interruptions of adverts while trying to watch your favourite show in most instances achieve the opposite. The main reason people get annoyed by adverts, according to a Statista survey, is that the 51% majority is bothered by ads that are not relevant.
But MinimumDepositCasinos goes to great lengths to present offers in a fashion that caters directly to the needs and requirements of individuals such as the highly popular R100 casino signup bonuses.
Casinos made RWC 2023 streaming available to everyone
South Africans were beyond happy that the Rugby World Cup came to their screens. Pineapple, Hollywood Bets and South African Breweries paid MultiChoice R58 million to obtain the sub-license right to broadcast the Rugby World Cup. Many South Africans were able to watch it thanks to their monthly DStv premium of R799.Others were not so lucky and therefore flooded pubs that were screening it.
SABC will now broadcast 16 matches, which will include all the matches of the Springboks. Rugby is hugely popular in the country. It is watched by men, women, and children of all ages, and everyone will remember the three brands that forked out R58 million to make this possible!

Find out why UK players should or shouldn’t use PayPal at casinos
When the first UK online casinos popped up in the mid-1990s, depositing funds required mailing checks or using tricky bank wires. How times have changed. Today’s UK punters enjoy a plethora of instant, convenient digital payment options.
Amongst the most popular are PayPal Casinos, the pioneering e-wallet and payment processor. With over 20 years in business and 300 million users worldwide, PayPal has become a household name. Its familiarity and ease of use appeals to UK gamblers looking for a straightforward way to fund their casino fun.
But is PayPal always the best bet? This quick guide will delve into the pros and cons of using PayPal at UK licensed online casinos. We’ll also highlight the top alternatives for players wanting to explore other secure, fast payment methods. Ready? Let’s jump straight into it!
Advantages of using PayPal at UK casinos
For UK gamblers, the decision to use PayPal for real money play at online casinos is a no-brainer given the key benefits it provides around security, speed and convenience. We take a look at the pros below:
Security and trustworthiness
Safety and security is the number one priority for any casino player when gambling online. After all, you want assurance that your personal information and funds are protected. PayPal offers that peace of mind with industry-leading security protocols. The company invests heavily in advanced encryption, fraud monitoring tools, and many other cybersecurity measures.
For starters, all financial transactions are secured through 128-bit SSL technology – the same level used by major banks. This keeps payment info and account details private when depositing or withdrawing with UK licensed gambling sites.
During account logins, users are asked to enter a randomly generated security code sent to their mobile device. This two-factor authentication provides an extra shield against unauthorized access.
Further protection comes via PayPal’s comprehensive Seller and Buyer Protection programs. These safeguard users against potential fraud or issues with services purchased through PayPal, thereby providing much-needed consumer confidence.
Given their sterling track record of safely processing billions in payments since 1998, PayPal has rightfully earned a reputation as an exceptionally secure and reliable payment service.
Transaction speed and convenience with PayPal
Nothing spoils the gambling experience more than lengthy delays on deposits or withdrawals. You want your money in play or winnings in hand swiftly. Once again, PayPal delivers on this front with deposits processed instantly to ensure funds are available for wagering within seconds of initiating a transaction.
Withdrawals are also exceptionally quick compared to traditional methods. While withdrawal times vary by individual casino policies, most sites process PayPal cash-outs within 24 hours.
Convenience and flexibility
Let’s face it, UK punters want to spend time spinning slots or wagering at tables, not messing about with lengthy payment procedures. Again, PayPal does a great job at this. Once you have set up your account and funded it, deposits only require logging in and confirming the amount. With a few clicks you’re ready for action at your chosen UK licensed casino.
The convenience factor extends to withdrawals. A simple request at the cashier is all that’s needed for winnings to be zapped back to your PayPal balance. For busy punters, that convenience and flexibility brings significant upside. PayPal lets you swiftly get to the good stuff – enjoying thrilling casino games.
Disadvantages of using PayPal at UK casinos
PayPal is clearly an attractive option, but UK players need to be aware of a handful of possible downsides that could affect their experience. We explore them below:
Fees and costs associated with PayPal transactions
PayPal itself does not charge for deposits or withdrawals within the UK. However, some credit card companies classify PayPal gambling transactions as cash advances. This triggers additional fees and higher interest rates.
For withdrawals abroad, currency conversion costs also come into play. Most reputable UK licensed casinos deduct a small percentage from payouts to account for exchange rates when sending to your PayPal balance.
These fees are generally minimal, but can accumulate over time for frequent gamblers. Some savvy punters may prefer Casino payment methods with less associated costs. But for most, the extra expense is a fair trade off for PayPal’s positives.
Limited availability at certain casino sites
While immensely popular, PayPal does have limited availability at some online casinos due to their company policies. PayPal prohibits transactions with gambling sites in jurisdictions where these activities have unclear legal status.
This does restrict PayPal as a payment option on sites not regulated under strict UK laws. However, most reputable casinos serving British punters integrate PayPal alongside other suitable methods. So there are still plenty of top PayPal casinos to enjoy.
Not ideal for high rollers
Given its focus on consumer satisfaction, PayPal does cap deposit and withdrawal limits. For the average UK punter though, there’s nothing to worry about as the thresholds stretch into the thousands to easily accommodate typical casino budgets.
But high rollers and VIP players making sizeable transfers may find PayPal inconvenient compared to payment methods with higher limits. As your gambling budget increases, alternatives like bank transfers are a better option.
Top PayPal alternatives for UK online casino payments
As we mentioned, PayPal will suit most UK punters needs, but it’s not the only secure, convenient payment option available. Let’s look at some of the top alternatives to consider:
Direct debit or credit cards
Good old debit and credit cards remain a popular standby for depositing and withdrawing at UK licensed gambling sites. Visa and MasterCard in particular boast nearly universal acceptance.
Funding your account directly via card provides convenience similar to PayPal – just enter your details and the transfer is instant. Withdrawals also hit your account promptly within days.
The main downsides are deposit limits, transaction fees, and the lack of buffer between your bank and the casino. But for punters who enjoy liquidity and cashback rewards, cards are a solid payment choice.
Online banking and e-wallets
Other increasingly popular options are specialised online banking and financial services like Trustly and Skrill. These allow digital transfers directly from your bank account to the casino. By linking your bank details, you can deposit and withdraw seamlessly without using an intermediary like PayPal. This provides faster payouts and higher maximums that appeal to VIPs.
The only real disadvantage is slightly less separation between your bank and the casino. But trusting a UKGC licensed site alleviates this concern for most players.
Prepaid vouchers
Lastly, don’t count out prepaid vouchers like Paysafecard. These cash vouchers purchased from local shops provide an easy way to fund your account without any bank details needed. While not supported for withdrawals, prepaid vouchers allow anonymous, hassle-free deposits. There are also no stress about limits or overdrafts. Just top up and play.
Conclusion
Most UK punters will find PayPal checks all the boxes but it’s always good to know your options. Thankfully, reputable UKGC licensed casinos provide a range of secure, convenient payment methods to suit different needs.
By understanding the pros and cons of PayPal and how it compares to alternatives, you can better select your ideal casino payment solutions.
So what are you waiting for? Sign up with a top PayPal online casino, fund your account, and start enjoying the UK’s leading slots, roulette, blackjack, and more from trusted operators. As always, gamble responsibly.

Romania moves to ban gambling venues in small towns
By Shadrack Kairu
Stricter gambling laws are coming to Romania. The lawmakers have approved Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu’s executive order that bans gambling venues in small towns and villages with populations not exceeding 15,000 residents. The so-called “law on slot machines” was reportedly passed by the Chamber of Deputies via a unanimous vote. Some 243 deputies voted in the ban’s favour, four were absent, while two did not vote. As traditional gambling venues face these new restrictions, many players may turn to online casinos as an alternative, seeking a regulated environment to continue their gaming activities.
This legislation is one of its kind in the history of gambling in Romania. It states that slot machines and gambling facilities should not appear near remote areas and sparsely populated towns. It effectively criminalizes gambling in localities with populations of less than 15,000 people.
Two main reasons given by the parliament were considered critical in justifying the passing of this legislation. These include tackling the issues of gambling addiction and mitigating the potential consequences posed by unregulated gambling in Romania.
Through this legislation, first and foremost, policymakers hope to reduce excessive gambling. Additionally, they aim to protect vulnerable communities from exploitation and put brakes on the rapid proliferation of gambling venues, primarily in small localities. As reported, this ban will affect almost 90% of all localities in Romania, signalling a noteworthy shift in the country’s approach to regulating its gambling sector.
Stats on gambling in Romania
Gambling in Romania officially took off in 1906 when the country installed its first democratic government. The dictator’s regime was overthrown to pave the way for introducing a liberal economy. Right now, gambling in this southeastern European country is conducted on a large scale.
The National Gaming Office, the state body that registers and approves the sector, states that the Romania gambling market consists of about 12,000 land-based gambling venues. It’s in these facilities that sports betting services, casino games, lotteries, bingo, and other gambling forms, are offered to the public. These venues pay taxes to the government in the form of license and advertising fees and ticket sales. The proceeds are used to fund public works and services.
It’s worthwhile to note that online gambling in Romania became legal in 2010. With that, trusted internet operators were entitled to receive a government license. Online gambling in the country had reached new levels by the early 2000s.
Online gambling operators contribute tax revenues to the government as do land-based venues. But in addition to annual licensing fees, online providers are to pay authorization fees, responsible gaming contributions, online gamers’ winnings, and miscellaneous fees.
Romania’s revenue in the online gambling market is projected to reach $809.50m in 2024, according to Statistica, with an annual growth rate of 5.6% from 2024-2029. It will thus result in a projected market volume of $1.063m by 2029.
Specifically, the user penetration in the online gaming market will hit 3.5% in 2024, indicating a remarkable surge in online gambling activity.
The proliferation of gambling across the country has prompted the government to tighten its gambling regulation measures. In 2015, Romania introduced its first comprehensive gambling law. This was intended to address the rapid spread of gambling and to ensure a secure, fair, and responsible gaming environment for its citizens.
As if that was not enough, in October 2023, the Romanian government introduced newer, stricter sets of restrictive measures for the gambling sector. Notably, the Ministry of Finance announced a huge hike in license fees for gambling operators. Operators will now pay €500,000/year for an online casino license, €200,000 for a lottery license, and €100 per machine for video lottery terminals licenses. Others are casino licenses costing €4,000 per table, bingo gaming halls costing €5,000, and poker costing €5,000 per club. Licenses for telecast bingo games will now cost €500,000.
But even as the government rolls out all these measures, there’s no recent data to show exactly how many Romanian citizens suffer from gambling addiction. According to Euronews, the last survey was reportedly done in 2016 and found that there were an estimated 100,000 addicted gamblers in Romania. However, the source cautions that the number today could be even higher.
Recent research by Save the Children shows that 1 in 7 children across the country spends money on gambling. Also, it shows that at least 10% of Romanian children have a parent who spends money on gambling.
What Legislators say about gambling
Proponents of the law say that the passing of the legislation is a major milestone towards curbing the negative influence of excessive gambling on vulnerable populations. Following the law’s passing, the PM took the opportunity to declare the coalition government’s victory over illegal gambling operations reaching remote and densely populated country areas. He reportedly said that this marks the end of the “good old days” for illegal gambling facilities as the ban will likely affect nearly 90% of such establishments in Romania.
Alfred Simonis, the leader of the Social Democrats, echoed the PM’s sentiments. “It is the first law adopted in Parliament in 30 years against this mafia that has controlled the political world until now,” he said.
He stressed the need to take decisive actions in controlling the pervasive influence of gambling in Romania. “Right now we are fighting an industry that has a total turnover of €10-12 billion”.
Meanwhile, some factions raised questions over the manner in which this legislation was formulated. Descending voices within the parliamentary chamber said the government could’ve taken stricter measures to address the detrimental impacts of gambling on society. They criticize the government for not consulting with stakeholders prior to its implementation or, respectively, question how the population figure of 15,000 was reached. Some even accuse the authorities of collusion with the gaming sector due to the perceived leniency of measures taken by the government.
Ionut Mosteanu, the leader of the opposition USR, is on record saying “They thought that slot machines only damage 15,000 people”. He further stated, “There was not even a debate to see how many townships qualify for this 15,000. Why not 16, 17, why not two million and you would ban them definitively?”
On the other side, industry players from the gambling sector remained optimistic that, through this new piece of legislation, the authorities will effectively stamp out the black market, which they said thrives in the absence of legal gambling options.
It is worth noting that this legislation was first introduced on 6 October 2023. Under the Romanian Constitution, it was supposed to go through both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate for approval. However, the government through PM Ciolac signed an Emergency Ordinance that allowed the bill to move to the lower house of parliament for fast tracing.
Upon the parliament’s discretion, the legislation could be approved as it is, approved with amendments or rejected altogether. If rejected, it would no longer be effective.
Now that this ordinance has been approved, it rests with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, who may decide to put it into law or send it back to parliament. If approved, the law states that it will take effect within 10 days of being officially enacted.
According to reports, once this ban comes into force, it will affect the operations of Romania’s 27 licensed sports wagering operators. Even market leaders such as SuperBet, Rizio, StanleyBet, Mozzart Kladionica, and Fortuna Entertainment, will be affected.
Atlantic City casino workers head to court to have smoking banned at land-based casinos
By Ramona Depares
Atlantic City casino players who enjoy a smoke or two at the tables and slots may very well see their plans go up in smoke, as the long-debated ban for smoking at land-based casinos in the US is now heading to court for a definitive ruling.
Naturally, this isn’t an issue players at the top online casinos face, but the controversy at retail outlets has been raging for quite some time. Since 2006, in fact, when the Smoke-Free Air Act was enacted to guarantee a smoke-free environment for US workers. The act, however, exempted all casinos from its provisions.
Atlantic City casino workers, as well as some of the gamblers themselves, have long complained about exposure to second-hand smoke at these venues. Now, United Auto Workers and another group representing casino employees have filed a lawsuit demanding that the law be amended to extend its protection to casino workers.
How harmful is second-hand smoke at land-based casinos?
The continued rise of online casinos in the US may have pushed the issue to the back burner, but the health risks associated with second-hand smoke in casinos are significant and well-documented. Independently carried out research has been pretty consistent in confirming that casino workers and patrons are exposed to dangerous levels of toxic substances when smoking is permitted.
A study conducted by the BMJ Journals (Babb S, McNeil C, Kruger J, et al Secondhand smoke and smoking restrictions in casinos: a review of the evidenceTobacco Control 2015;24:11-17.) goes as far as to say that “there is no safe level of secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure”. The study describes smoking in casinos as a “significant public health problem”, adding that both casino employees and guests are exposed to high levels of SHS”.
This was confirmed by the elevated levels of tobacco-specific biomarkers in blood tests carried out on non-smokers. Even more worryingly, the study revealed that partial smoking restrictions, or designated smoke-free zones, did not do anything to protect non-smokers from SHS. The study concluded that this risk to employees and patrons is both significant and preventable, calling it “imperative for public health and workplace safety that smoking in casinos be stringently regulated or completely banned”.
The BMJ Journals noted that the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers agreed that “at present, the only means of effectively eliminating health risk associated with indoor exposure is to ban smoking activity.” The statement also referred to a study of 25 casinos in the UK, where 83% of participants reported being nearly always exposed to SHS at work, 78% stated that they minded if people smoked near them at work, 57% believed they had health problems as a result of second-hand smoke at work and a whopping 65% supported banning smoking in all customer and working areas of their casinos.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) echoes the words of the above, calling SHS at land-based casinos a “cause of premature death among US workers”. Casino workers, according to the American Cancer Society, face a higher risk of illness caused by SHS than any other workers.
This risk includes a higher incidence of lung cancer. Casinos were found to have nicotine concentrations that are 2.4 to 18.5 times higher than in offices and homes, and 1.5 to 11.7 times higher than in restaurants. The ACS quotes a study by Achutan C, West C, Mueller C., Boudreau Y, and Mead K (2009) on the impact of SHS in Pennsylvania casinos, which found that exposure causes five times as many premature deaths as the mining disasters that had afflicted the state.
In studies carried out by the National Cancer Institute, casinos were also found to have 12 times as many smoke particles than you find outdoors, with nicotine and a number of toxins – including carcinogens, benzene, naphthalene, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde. Moreover, casino guests were found with significantly elevated levels of a lung carcinogen caused by tobacco after a four-hour visit to a casino where smoking was allowed.
Studies quoted by the ACS also suggest that partial bans don’t work, as a study in 21 Nevada casinos revealed that guests at a non-smoking restaurant that was adjacent to the gaming areas where smoking is permitted had 60% of the amount of SHS as guests in the smoking areas.
Even the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has weighed in on the matter. A blog post by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) describes how the Institute has gone on record saying that “even low levels of secondhand smoke exposure can be harmful” and even recommended that smoking right next to building entrances and air intakes should be prohibited so as to prevent any smoke from entering indoors. The Institute added that casinos should appoint a physician to evaluate employees who were suffering from respiratory issues origins from workplace exposures.
Finally, the National Cancer Institute leaves no room for doubt about the perils of second-hand smoke to casino workers, noting that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. National Toxicology Program, the U.S. Surgeon General, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer have all classified secondhand smoke as a known human carcinogen. It added that some research also points to an increase in breast cancer, nasal sinus cavity cancer, and nasopharyngeal cancer in adults.
When one considers all this, together with the fact that the National Council of Legislators from the Gaming States had actually passed a resolution to support 100% smoke-free gaming venues as long ago as 2009, it is hardly surprising to see that casino workers in Atlantic City and across the US are up in arms about it.
What the lawsuit states
So what is the basis of the lawsuit? Put simply, casino workers’ representatives are disputing an exemption found in the Smoke-Free Air Act. Although this act bans smoking in enclosed, indoor public places and workplaces, it contains a section that specifically exempts all land-based casinos and bingo parlours from this ban.
According to news reports, the lawsuit names New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and State Health Commissioner Kaitlan Baston as failing to protect the health of casino workers by not including them in this ban.
The lawsuit was filed by the United Auto Workers union, representing workers at Bally’s, Caesars and Tropicana casinos in New Jersey alongside a group called Casino Employees Against Smoking’s (Harmful) Effects (CEASE).
What are workers hoping to get from the lawsuit?
The Atlantic City smoking ban lawsuit hinges on the casino workers’ claim that the exclusion is considered unconstitutional in New Jersey because it grants favouritism to the casinos. The exemption also denied workers their state constitutional right to safety and equal protection.
Claiming that some casino workers have suffered cancer as a result of this situation, the lawsuit is asking for the exemption granted by the Smoke-Free Act to be declared unconstitutional. While the NJ Health Department refused to comment pending litigation, in reality, there has been some progress made in the battle as the governor has gone on record to say that he would sign a bill banning smoking in casinos.
How Will This Lawsuit Affect Casinos In Other States?
How this will affect other gambling states across the US remains to be seen, with Pennsylvania already seeking to amend its own Clean Indoor Air Act of 2008 to include a ban in casinos and bars. Should the Atlantic City casino workers lawsuit be successful, it is likely to have wider-reaching implications for casinos across other states.
If this were to pass, it is also very likely that US online casinos will see an increased surge in popularity, with gamblers who don’t want to give up smoking while enjoying their pastime spending more time online in the privacy of their homes.
