New data finds 1.3 million people in UK may have a gambling problem
By Cobus van Wyk
Responsible gambling in the United Kingdom has again come under the spotlight following the release of new research statistics from the UK Gambling Commission. New data shows that up to 1.3 million adults in the UK may have a gambling problem. It also found that 44% of 16-year-old Brits gambled at least once by March 2023. By the same date, a total of 14 million players were active in some form of online gambling at online casinos UK.
The new research revealed that the prevalence of problem gambling could be eight times greater than previously estimated. Prior to this, it was reported that gambling addiction among adults in Great Britain was 0.3%. However, the new data with a revised methodology shows that problem gambling may affect up to 2.5% of the adult population. This could potentially be a result of the growing online casino UK market.
Stuart Andrew, Minister of Gambling, shared that the latest survey provides a more accurate depiction of the harm and participation in gambling. Andrew currently oversees a governmental examination of wagering regulation, which is expected to result in stricter safeguards for players, higher stake limits for online slots, and a mandatory levy on betting companies to fund addiction treatment and promote responsible gambling.
Labour MP, Carolyn Harris, told media it was not surprised by the news. Harris hopes that the numbers will be recognised, and used for appropriate measures to safeguard citizens.
Problem gambling statistics in the UK
Online casinos UK offer numerous forms of gambling, including participation in the National Lottery and horse racing. Finder.com conducted an analysis of gambling statistics to show how Brits spend their money and whether they engage in responsible wagering. Problem gambling is gambling to a degree that damages, disrupts, or compromises personal, family, or recreational pursuits.
In the year ending March 2022, the UK industry’s gross gambling yield was £14.1 billion. Statistics show that in the year ending March 2023, 44% of adults in the UK had gambled once; the average spending on gaming and betting per year per person is £141, or £2.70 per week.
The estimated number of problem gamblers in the UK is 168,149, reflecting a 50% increase from 2022. The most likely to become problem gamblers are aged between 20 and 24, and men are seven times more likely than women to fall into this category. UK adults spent a total of £3.3 billion on gaming and betting between April 2022 and March 2023. By March 2023, online gambling participation had increased by 78% compared to April 2022, while real online betting was 35% more popular than online casino slots.
The data found that men were at much greater risk than women. Mend made up 148,004 of the total figure and just 20,145 were women.
Online Gambling Statistics
The average session time for gambling in the year ending March 2023 was 17 minutes on online slots, while December 2022 saw the highest number of sessions lasting over an hour.
The research further found that 44% of 16-year-old Brits gambled at least once by March 2023.
A total of 14 million players were active in some form of online gambling at online casinos UK, by March 2023, compared to 10 million by April 2020, an increase of 78.4%. In real-event betting, the least popular for the same period in online gambling was poker, played by 230,685 people.
New research comes following Safer Gambling Week in November
The United Kingdom Gambling Commission is one of the most respected for its initiatives in promoting responsible gambling. The release of the new research comes just after Safer Gambling Week was commemorated in November. Safer Gambling Week was launched across Ireland and the UK and was a seven-day awareness campaign emphasising safer gambling tools to increase responsible play all year round.
Leading charities, Betknownmore UK and Young Gamers & Gamblers Education Trust (YGAM) launched a program called Safer Gambling Training to provide employees of the gambling industry with specialist training to help safeguard players from harm and strengthen player protection standards.
Stuart Andrew, DCMS Gambling Minister, shared that Safer Gambling Week was a reminder of the work already in progress by the industry, regulators, and government to prevent harm.
In taking action to improve safe gambling and prevent addiction, the focus is to strengthen the fight against it and increase awareness to prevent potentially life-changing losses.
A huge highlight during this campaign was that the industry saw a 12.5% increase in affected gamblers utilising tools such as deposit limits. In October, over 200,000 set account limits, including 61% of first-time limit setters.
This is a huge step in the right direction showing the players are trying to safeguard themselves in the UK.
In addition, Safer Gambling Week smashed all previous social media records. In terms of creating awareness, impressions reached over 50 million across social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. The Betting and Gambling Council shared that it was the most successful campaign ever.
With new research methodology, decision-makers believe it will help build a much stronger evidence base for improved regulations in future and elevate responsible gambling.
Incredible bonuses from new $1 Casinos
Online gambling sites have been offering different types of casino bonuses since the 1990s, when the first casino went live. One of these is the affordable $1 deposit casino bonus that allows you to play casino games for real money without making big investments. But do you know the origin of this world’s favourite $1 bonus? Well, Royal Vegas, a Canadian online casino that has been in the gaming space since 2000, is the brain behind the bonus. This casino has been offering $1 bonuses for a while and is currently providing Canadians with 30 free spins for $1.
New gambling sites such as Bizzo Casino have also caught on to this bonus system, and are now offering a whopping 150 free spins plus a match bonus for $1. In this article, we will tell you the origin of the $1 bonus and compare the one at Royal Vegas to those offered by new online casinos Canada.
Origin of the World’s Favourite $1 Bonus
The story behind the world’s favourite $1 bonus is a tale of innovation and excitement that started with Royal Vegas Casino. The online gaming company was the first to launch the revolutionary idea of a bonus, which lets players enjoy all the excitement of a casino for just one dollar. Moreover, the casino is a well-known brand in the industry and has been operating since 2000. After recognizing that not everyone wants to spend a fortune to experience the thrills of online casinos Canada, Royal Vegas Casino was the first to develop the “$1 Deposit Casinos” craze.
It is, however, worth mentioning that free spins for 1 were based on Fortunium Gold Mega Moolah, a progressive jackpot slot machine developed by Microgaming. This steampunk-themed slot machine plays on a 5×5 grid with 40 paylines. Furthermore, the game has a theoretical RTP of 92.67% and a maximum win potential of 800X. The hit frequency for the game is 31.56%, meaning you can expect to land a winner at least once every three spins.
As of now, Royal Vegas is providing new Canadian players with 30 bonus spins for $1. The bonus has wagering requirements of 200X, which must be completed within 2 months of bonus activation. Plus, the free spins are only available on the Fortunium Gold: Mega Moolah, a progressive jackpot slot with a jackpot prize of over $12 million.
Bizzo Casino Has Joined with 150 Free Spins and a Match Bonus Of $1
Bizzo Casino is one of the latest $1 deposit casinos to copy the Royal Vegas Casino’s bonus system. The Curacao-licensed casino launched back in 2021 and is currently providing you with a whopping 150 free spins plus $1000 for $1. This welcome bonus is spread across the first two deposits as shown below:
- First deposit – 100% match bonus up to $250+100 free spins
- Second deposit – 50% match bonus up to $750+50 free spins
During our test of Bizzo Casino, we claimed the bonus and can assure you that the process is straightforward. All you need to do is visit the casino using our link, register an account, and make your first deposit of $1. There is no bonus or promo code needed and your bonus will reflect in your account right away after making the deposit.
Once you have claimed your $1 welcome bonus at Bizzo Casino, you will need to wager it at least 40 times before requesting any withdrawal. The free spins are only valid for 3 days, meaning you must complete turnover requirements within 3 days. On the other hand, for the match bonus, the turnover requirements must be completed within 7 days.
It is worth mentioning that not all games contribute towards wagering requirements. After claiming 100 free spins on the first deposit, you will need to wager them on the Dig Dig Digger or Mechanical Clover slot machines. On the other hand, the free spins on the second deposit are only available on the Johny Cash or Elvis Frog slot machines in Vegas. For the match bonus, you can only use it on slot machines, which contribute 100% towards wagering requirements. Another thing worth mentioning is that the maximum bet with an active bonus is capped at $5. You can learn more in our Bizzo Casino Review.
How Does Bizzo Bonus Compare to Royal Vegas’s Bonus
The $1 casino bonuses available at Bizzo Casino and Royal Vegas Casino are among the most generous incentives you will ever come across. However, each of these bonuses offers a unique proposition, and understanding their differences will help you make an informed choice that aligns with your gaming preference. In this section, we will compare the two incentives and tell you which one is better.
When we compared the size of the bonuses, we realized that the offer at Bizzo Casino is more generous than the one at Royal Vegas. As the originator of this bonus, Royal Vegas offers 30 free spins only, while Bizzo Casino offers 150 free spins coupled with a match bonus of up to $1000. So, if you are the type of player who focuses on the size of the bonus, you should consider signing up with Bizzo Casino.
Another main difference exists in wagering requirements. 30 bonus spins at Royal Vegas are subject to wagering requirements of 200X. While, free spins and the match bonus at Bizzo Casino come with wagering requirements of 40X. As you probably know, low wagering requirements mean that you can convert your bonus to cash quickly. Bizzo Casino has low wagering requirements, meaning it beats Royal Vegas in this area.
When it comes to eligible games, Royal Vegas offers free spins on the famous Fortunium Gold Mega Moolah. This is a progressive jackpot slot machine and a single spin on it could unlock a life-changing jackpot of over $12 million. Bizzo Casino, on the other hand, offers free spins on several slot machines including Dig Dig Digger, Mechanical Clover, Johny Cash, and Elvis Frog in Vegas. These are video slots with no progressive jackpots. This means Royal Vegas is better in this area.
The expiration dates of the two bonuses are also different. $1 free spins at Royal Vegas are valid for 2 months. While, free spins at Bizzo Casino are valid for 3 days, while the match bonus expires after 7 days. As you can see, Royal Vegas offers players enough time to wager their welcome bonus. If you prefer using casino bonuses without being pressured, Royal Vegas is the best option.
Try This Bonus Out Today
In affordable casino gaming, $1 deposit casinos offer an exhilarating experience with their free spins for $1 bonus. Bizzo Casino, a newcomer, offers not one but two fantastic bonuses for your $1 deposit including 150 free spins on high-quality slot games and a match bonus to expand your gaming choices. Meanwhile, the iconic Royal Vegas Casino presents its classic $1 deposit, 30 free spins bonus on the famous Fortunium Gold slot machine from Microgaming. So, without delay, immerse yourself in the world of minimum deposit Casinos gaming, maximize your adventure, and chase thrilling wins by trying these bonuses today.
Archbishops call for a ban on gambling adverts in Ontario
By Shadrack Kairu
A powerful trio of Ontario bishops recently made a joint statement calling for a complete prohibition of advertisements relating to Canadian online casinos and sports betting across all media platforms in the province.
Archbishop Linda Nicholls of the Anglican Church of Canada, National Indigenous Anglican Archbishop Chris Harper, and other bishops of the ecclesiastical province of Ontario believe such promotions should face the same marketing restrictions as tobacco.
“We urge you to recognize that the well-being of people can be deeply affected by addiction to gambling which is now brought into the living rooms and on the laptops, smartphones and tablets through this business model,” their statement read in the Anglican Journal.
While not condemning gambling itself given it’s a personal choice, the religious leaders opposed policies allowing unrestrained promotion of potentially addictive behaviours to impressionable demographics like youth and vulnerable groups.
The archbishops further encouraged Anglicans across Ontario to join the Campaign to Ban Ads on Gambling and contact their members of parliament demanding the disestablishment of iGaming in the province.
In their statement, the bishops expressed grave concerns over the psychological effects and risks posed by widespread gambling advertising across media.
They believe the constant exposure to betting promotions in living rooms and personal devices strongly enables and encourages addictive gambling habits. From their experience ministering to affected congregations, the bishops want to spare more families this “suffering” by limiting betting ads through responsible provincial policies.
More support for ad bans from the Canadian Mental Health Association
The archbishops’ anti-gambling advertisement position closely mirrors that of major mental health organizations in Ontario like the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).
Last May, the CMHA directly petitioned the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) to impose a total ban on online gambling promotions in the province. Their proposal was aimed at protecting children from the influence of betting the same way tobacco marketing laws shield minors from the appeal of smoking.
The mental health authority cited alarming rates of youth experimenting with internet gambling in Canada, often initiated through constant exposure to sportsbooks and online casino adverts. According to a 2021 study, online gambling among students increased from 4% to 15% between 2019-2021.
If an outright prohibition proves impossible, the CMHA is lobbying for mandatory safeguards to curb underage exposure to gambling promotion. Their shared goal with the archbishops is to prevent the next generation from developing gambling disorders early in life.
Celebs and athletes will be barred from promoting online gambling in Ontario in 2024
This is not the first time gambling advertisements have come under the spotlight in Ontario. In 2023, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) announced plans to revise its standards on the use of celebrities, influencers and athletes that promote online casinos and sportsbooks. The updated policies are scheduled for implementation by February 2024.
Key restrictions include barring personalities with clear youth appeal from appearing in Ontario online gambling ads. The regulator hopes to counter the power of role models like sports stars normalizing gambling through endorsements tied to sports broadcasts.
However, famous faces may still participate in responsible gambling campaigns that promote positive play and provide resources for players battling addiction. The AGCO believes balanced reforms can limit youth exposure while allowing operators to market to adult audiences.
Initial talks between regulators and industry representatives show promise for a smooth transition to the new rules. The AGCO aims to strike a balance between enabling Ontario’s new internet gaming market and instituting vital safeguards against youth addiction.
Unlike AGCO’s targeted approach, the archbishops advocate for sweeping legislative changes modelled on existing bans for tobacco adverts. They point to provincial laws recognizing the harm of tobacco marketing and urge leaders to view gambling promotions through the same protective lens.
In their view, allowing businesses to advertise potentially addictive activities to the population, especially teens and other high-risk groups, violates principles of ethical corporate conduct and fair consumer protection.
Archbishop Nicholls asserts that society accepts reasonable limits on marketing products like alcohol, tobacco, firearms or pharmaceuticals to children due to public health considerations. In her view, the same rationale applies to prohibiting gambling ads that research shows actively “endangers adolescent mental wellbeing”.
Rather than addressing issues retroactively through addiction support programs, the archbishops believe Ontario should be more proactive in preventing youth gambling disorders from developing in the first place. They hope sympathetic lawmakers will share their perspectives and champion reforms.
A core concern expressed by the archbishops is how embedding online gambling into mobile devices and routine at-home media consumption risks normalizing addictive behaviour for Ontario families.
They argue the government would never allow uncontrolled advertising for cannabis, alcohol or tobacco in family television viewing and social media. Yet, they say the current policies ignore the parallel mental health impacts of promoting 24/7 at-home betting options.
The bishops believe strongly that exposing children and parents to a constant barrage of gambling ads during family viewing culture severely downplays the risks of problem gambling. It portrays high-stakes wagering as a harmless form of entertainment rather than the serious psychiatric issue health professionals acknowledge it can become.
Online Gambling in Ontario
The archbishops’ statement follows explosive growth in Ontario’s online gambling market since regulated operations launched in April 2022. Operated by the provincial government agency iGaming Ontario, the new digital marketplace has exceeded early projections.
In its debut year, over 1.6 million active player accounts wagered a staggering $35.6 billion on online casinos in Canada, sportsbooks and other gaming sites. These figures catapult Ontario into one of the top five internet gambling jurisdictions on the continent.
According to national statistics, around 1.6% of Canadian gamblers exhibit moderate to severe gambling disorders. In a large province like Ontario, this translates to approximately 25,600 adults struggling with harmful gambling habits as the market expands.
For underage users, there is a concern as several studies show underage users take up gambling earlier in age from offshore sites.
Presented with the archbishops’ statement, iGaming Ontario reiterated its foundational mandate is to make regulated online gambling safer for Ontarians compared to the previous unregulated offshore marketplace.
The agency believes allowing licensed operators to advertise their provincially sanctioned offerings helps better inform players of the important consumer protections that were previously absent with unregulated offshore operators.
These include mandatory responsible gambling tools like deposit limits, timed gaming breaks, and self-exclusion options. They also want operators to invest in public awareness campaigns focused exclusively on responsible gambling messaging and addiction support resources.
While sympathetic to concerns around youth exposure, iGaming Ontario contends their upcoming celebrity endorsement restrictions complement their efforts in promoting healthy play among adults. The agency argues that a measured approach can enable Ontario’s regulated internet gaming market while still prioritizing public well-being through crucial safeguards.
Ultimately, the archbishops hope that increased public debate over gambling advertising laws, informed by compassionate concern for those struggling with addiction, leads to greater corporate responsibility across the online betting industry.
With supportive lawmakers willing to lead legislative reforms modelled on precedents like tobacco marketing bans, the bishops believe Ontario has a genuine opportunity to become a leader in proactive, ethical approaches to regulating high-risk behaviours.
By taking bold action, they hope the province could set a progressive example for jurisdictions worldwide grappling with the rise of digital gambling.

Crash Games, why these should be your new favourite games and where to play
There’s a new trend hitting NZ minimum deposit casinos – crash gambling. Fast-paced and easy to play, these games originated at crypto casinos, but didn’t take long to move into the mainstream.
Most of our top-rated sites are now also a crash games casino, so buckle up and get ready for the adrenalin rush. Read on to find out why crash gambling New Zealand has become all the rage and why you really need to get in on the action.
What is a Crash Casino Game?
Wondering what the big deal is about crash gambling? The appeal lies in the straightforward gameplay and the high thrill factor. Put simply, a crash casino game is all about the dare, with objects moving or rising until they crash.
All you need to do is place your bet and hang on, as the multiplier starts out at 0.0x with every fresh round and continues to increase before stopping randomly: this is called the ‘crash’. The longer you dare stay in the game, the bigger the final reward. However, you need to cash out before the crash happens. If you succeed, the amount you win is determined by the value of the multiplier when you cashed out and the size of your bet.
Not for the faint of heart, but if it’s pure excitement you’re after, crash gambling delivers and then some.
Minimum deposit casinos NZ offer four main types of crash gambling games. The most popular one is probably the plane crash casino game Aviator. You can also find rocket crash games like Spaceman, line crash games like Crash, and Balloon crash games like Cappadocia. We’ll learn more about the most popular titles further down.
The strategy behind Casino Crash Games
Let’s say it as it is: when playing at a crash games casino, whether you win or lose is largely a matter of luck. On the face of it, the gameplay is so simple: stay in the game as long as you can before the crash takes place. You may think this means you should launch in blindly with no thought or strategy. But you’d be wrong, as you can always give Lady Luck a bit of a helping hand.
There are several tips and tricks that savvy players use when playing crash games at a minimum deposit casino NZ. Using these strategies may not 100% guarantee you a win, but they do make sure you maximise your chances of landing a big reward, and that you don’t waste your opportunities or your bankroll. Check out our list of top tips to employ as your cash games casino strategy.
- Always try the demo: As with all other games you’ll find at NZ minimum deposit casinos, practice makes perfect. Most crash gambling New Zealand comes with a freeplay option so you can understand the quirks of the game and get a handle on any patterns or trends. This is sometimes called a crash game simulator. Do give the demo a few goes before putting down a real money wager.
- Start out with small stakes: Don’t go all out from the get-go. If you lose, you’ll have used up all your budget in a literal ‘crash and burn’ move. Pace yourself, make multiple bets using small to medium-sized stakes and you’re more likely to soar and reap the rewards.
- Wager on low multipliers: Although this isn’t a 100% foolproof rule, the crash is more likely to happen when you reach the higher multipliers. The aim is to keep you in the game for as long as possible, so it’s very rare that a 1.5x multiplier will crash and throw you out of the game. Only bet on the high multipliers when you’re up for a high volatility experience.
- Choose a crash casino game with a high RTP: The higher the RTP (Return to Player), the higher your chance of landing a win. The principle is exactly the same as when playing online pokies. When playing at a minimum deposit casino NZ you’ll find the RTP percentage listed on the game info, so take note and if you’re serious about your strategy go for 96% and higher.
- Understand the principles of RNG gaming: A crash casino game works on the principle of Random Number Generation (RNG). This means that all wins are awarded randomly, and that just because a previous round performed in a particular way, it doesn’t mean the next one will do the same. In short, if the crash happened before 15x in all the previous rounds, this is just coincidence and the next round won’t necessarily comply with the trend.
- Experiment with the double bet feature: Some crash gambling games allow you to place a double bet. This gives you the best of both worlds, so don’t be afraid to use it. Make sure you switch up your bets to give yourself better odds. So, for example, don’t place both wagers on the same low multiplier scale as this will limit your range.
The most popular games around
Crash gambling offers the perfect trifecta that makes a casino game hugely popular: simplicity, engagement and instant wins. You won’t need to master any complicated rules when playing at a crash games casino: just lay down your wager and wait, holding on to the edge of your seat as the more time passes the more imminent the crash becomes. When we said that this is a pure adrenalin rush, we weren’t lying.
Let’s take a look at the most popular crash games you’ll find when playing at an online casino real money NZ.
Aviator

Created by Spribe, this is arguably the OG of crash gambling. Fasten your seatbelt, hop on the plane and make sure you eject before it crashes. With an RTP of 97%, you can pilot your way into huge rewards.
Lucky Jet
It’s off to space with Lucky Joe and his backpack thanks to this Gaming Corps creation. The multiplier reaches a whopping 5,072x and the 98.3% RTP seals the deal. You’ll also receive bonus winnings if you stay in the game long enough to land the helicopter fight.
Spaceman

This crash casino game is a total first for Pragmatic Play, which are more associated with pokies and live tables. At 95%, the RTP is a tad lower than its competitors but the thrills are just as high as you try to figure out how far the spaceman will fly with the potential of a 5,000x win. The unique 50% cashout feature also sweetens the deal as it lets you cash out half the bet at any given time while staying in play with the remaining 50%.
Jet X

Yet another space-themed crash game, this time courtesy of SmartSoft Gaming. This one comes with smaller stakes, as the multiplier starts at 1x and only climbs up to 4x maximum. Still, with an RTP of 96% it remains a favourite with Kiwi players.
Crash
Developed by BetConstruct, Crash is the simplest and the fastest crash gambling game of them all. Your playground is a simple graph: watch the vector rise and the multipliers grow until the crash happens. The RTP is 96% and multipliers reach a dizzying 10,000x, so fasten your seatbelts and get ready for the rush.

Pop Culture and Online Casinos: From James Bond to Virtual Reality
What happens in Vegas, does not stay in Vegas. Casino films fascinate audiences with enthralling plots and intricate stories of high-stakes gambling, mafia-world criminal intrigue, and luxurious Las Vegas playground lifestyles. Stories and films on land-based and online casinos are filled with colourful characters in dramatic stories that are masterfully depicted and created. Hollywood capitalises on the inherent mystique surrounding casino culture.
Blockbuster casino films are as familiar at the Oscars as real-life celebrities hanging out at gambling hotspots, portraying aspirational attitudes that impact pop culture beyond cinema. Due to the influence of casino films on fashion, music, and visitor experiences at online casinos, what occurs in Vegas no longer stays there. Instead, it overflows to revitalise growth in online casino real money gambling. A past-time favoured by the savvy to get the most bang for their buck at minimum deposit casinos.
Imaginary inventions and technical wizardry portrayed in iconic James Bond films inspired several real-life innovations. Gambling tie-ins include digitised characters, gadgets, and martinis enjoyed at casino tables, forming a link between the global phenomenon and online casinos. Showcasing the importance of brand integration is vital to superior multichannel integration in the new era of virtual reality.
Ultimately, the evolution of VR presents a fusion of storytelling and technology that enables players to walk into a 3D world and experience it at an exciting new level.
The James Bond Effect
The James Bond effect means something different to every fan. For some, it is a glamorised combination of behaviours discouraged in youth. The 007 effect explains why the success of Bond is contagious. He is a masculine icon, peerless spy, and notorious womaniser who keeps his audience guessing and uses uncertainty to increase mystique.
According to experts, baccarat remains a popular casino game due to the James Bond effect. His immaculate style and sophistication, and how he seamlessly fits into the extravagant world of high-stakes gambling. He is no stranger to the glitz and glamour of casinos. His most iconic scene may be the constant stake-doubling by Sean Connery in Dr No. The poker scene in Casino Royale was as elaborate as most 007 stunts. It moved away from being just a card game to focus on the stakes and the showdown between the blood-eyed villain and James Bond.
What perhaps appeals most to the audience and motivates many to play casino games is the one thing that gives Bond a superior edge indifference towards money. Cash is everything to his adversaries, even the wealthiest, although they’re even more power-hungry. An easy-come, easy-go attitude places Bond above any discomfort or emotional excitement.
Other Pop Culture Influences
The collaboration between filmmakers and casinos actively contributes towards creating gambling scenes via marketing ties and alliances. Partnerships are of great advantage to filmmakers, gaining access to professional advice and exclusive access to content. The film and gambling worlds have come together to produce captivating films that accurately portray casino entertainment.
The intricate world of gambling has massively impacted cinematography, and online casinos have opened a new source of inspiration for filmmakers. It’s a double-sided benefit for both industries since box office hits left their imprint on the casino world, sparking interest in branded and other games that entertain moviegoers on desktop and mobile.
However, the results of bringing two successful entities together ensure endless possibilities, global reach, and lucrative revenue. The rising trend in the fastest-growing market witnessed a plethora of collaborations between online casinos, Sports betting platforms, and celebrities. Celebrities famed for popularising online casinos include Christiano Ronaldo, Paris Hilton, Mike Tyson, and Nicki Minaj.
Celebrity endorsements successfully bridge the gap between the gaming and entertainment worlds. The future of celebrity endorsements is endless, and for such partnerships to be successful, online casinos and sportsbooks need to be fully regulated and licenced.
The Digital Age and Online Gaming
Gaming started as a solitary hobby, although through technology, it evolved into an integral part of mainstream culture. According to the latest internet trend reports and surveys, no digital or social media platform enjoys the same level of engagement as online gaming. Video games captivate the attention of the public more than Facebook.
Casino gambling remained one of the most popular entertainment options for socialising, mingling with friends, and having fun in a luxurious atmosphere. However, the arrival of the digital age introduced variety, accessibility, convenience, fast transactions, and endless possibilities. Most of all, it enables online casinos to cater to everyone, whether the preferred style is Western, Grecian, Egyptian, mythology, futuristic, or steampunk.
Mobile and online casino gaming is a new experience in the digital age, simulating traditional casino gaming. Online casinos feature incredible numbers of games and have opened the market to a much larger audience. The explosion in demand led to a massive increase in game developer interest in casino games. As a result of the surge in demand, game developers became increasingly interested in casino games, leading to the undeniable rise of high-quality games that captured players’ interest and attention in a new way known as gamification and introduced fresh elements into entertainment.
The online gambling and gaming environment never deviated from the social hub that started with physical casinos. Instead, it incorporated socialising with live dealer games. Benefits of the digital era include faster casino payment methods, ensuring easy access to numerous trustworthy and dependable methods, including fiat and cryptocurrencies.
Virtual Reality: The New Frontier
The fascinating online gambling world keeps up with the tempo at which technology evolves. The most exhilarating development in the modern era is the emergence of virtual reality (VR). It is a breakthrough in all industries, arguably even more so in entertainment, including online casinos eager to offer players an interactive experience that mirrors the thrills and excitement of physical casinos. VR casinos are no longer a concept or far-off vision. It is a reality that offers online casinos and sportsbooks the opportunity to present players with the ultimate virtual experience. Numerous brands have already launched 100% functional VR casinos featuring games such as poker, blackjack, and slots in a virtual reality environment. According to estimates, the VR gaming market could grow to $120 billion by 2024 if it progresses at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 67%. Virtual reality presents online casinos and sportsbooks with an exciting new opportunity for growth, offering an increase in player engagement, an enhanced experience, and ultimately it is a new flow of revenue. The benefit of VR development also reaches many other casino-related industries including game development. NetEnt is at the forefront of creating real-money virtual reality slots. Believing in the future of VR gaming, Gonzo’s Quest VR game is a multi-channel offering inviting players to enter El Dorado to locate treasures alongside the Spanish voyager.
The Role of Video Games and Esports
In a future of excitement and revolutionising changes, esports are among the latest trends impacting how players watch, view, follow, and ultimately engage with video games. As competitive gaming, esports are tournaments and leagues—similar competitions or matches where teams or individuals play games for money, prizes, or entertainment.
Esports, enjoyed by all and mostly played at a professional level, is known as electronic sports in which teams or individuals compete. The popularity of eSports continues to grow significantly, drawing millions of fans. The Journal of Positive Psychology recently celebrated the benefits of video games and esports, highlighting advantages such as social connections, a sense of purpose, and achievement.
Analytics shows that the esports economy is fully audience-driven and popular with Generation Z and Millennials. The esports industry value was estimated earlier this year at $1 billion, and it’s believed to increase at a rapid pace, especially since it also became a major field of academic study for higher education.
Technology continues to define the future, and it combines all forms of entertainment, whether it be films, casino games, esports, or video games. The ultimate fusion everyone is anxiously waiting for could be a fusion of all via virtual reality.
Celebrities and athletes to be barred in 2024 from promoting online gambling in Ontario
The face of online casinos in Canada is set to undergo a drastic change as The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) is set to ban any gambling advertising material that features celebrities. The ban also covers athletes, who are considered high-profile public figures under Canadian law.
With the gambling ban coming into effect as early as February 2024, this new responsible gambling measure is bound to impact not only any gambling activity at online casinos in Canada but also the celebrities themselves. Athletes and stars have long been the preferred brand ambassadors for many online gambling campaigns, a practice that will now have to change.
Minors idolizing celebrities and athletes is a concern
The measure was announced by AGCO as a means of curbing the activities of children and minors in gambling activities. It will mostly impact advertising within the province of Ontario, the territory where AGCO exercises legal authority over all forms of gambling.
The move could see the best online casinos in Canada having to rethink their entire advertising strategy, as many previous campaigns have used athletes like track runner Andre DeGrass, NHL stars Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews and ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky as ambassadors for various top online casinos Canada.
Among the reasons behind this ban, the regulator cited concerns that children tend to idolize public figures and use them as role models.
This could lead to a situation where they try to emulate the activities they see their icons depicting.
AGCO CEO Tom Mugham
These fears arose following reports made by The Centre for Addictions and Mental Health, which is the largest mental health teaching hospital in Canada. In May 2023, the Centre presented formal submissions to ACGO specifically calling for the “restriction of athlete and celebrity participation in advertising for internet gaming”, adding that such advertising should be “directed primarily to adults”.
By taking these recommendations on board and stopping influential figures from being the faces of online gambling, AGCO aims to increase protective measures to discourage children and youths from taking an early interest in online casinos in Canada.
The measure is extended to athletes given that these, too, are viewed as celebrities by the younger generation, and applies both to current and retired stars. The ban also includes any type of role models, social media influencers, entertainers, and even cartoon figures and symbols that are “likely to appeal to minors”.
On a more general level, the ban includes a requirement that any communications or advertising material that is related to online casinos in Canada cannot use themes or language that is intended to appeal primarily to minors. Moreover, no advertising of any kind can be displayed in the vicinity of schools or other locations that mostly target young people.
Concerns from the igaming industry
A number of online casinos in Canada, however, have expressed concerns over the strict ban, with some industry professionals warning that this could have a largely detrimental effect on the sector. Critics warned that the brunt of responsibility for the education of minors should be on the parents, who are best placed to exercise control over their offspring’s exposure to advertising that features any Canadian online casino.
Leading the charge against the new law is Gayle Mitchell, senior editor at Slotsonlinecanada.com, who went on record with The Sudbury Star as calling the new advertising ban “dangerous to the industry’s ongoing health”.
Rather than an outright ban, Mitchell suggested that a more tempered approach be adopted via measures like limiting channels where gambling adverts showcasing celebrities and athletes could be aired, as well as by introducing a time restriction of after 9 pm.
Moreover, critics argued, that online casinos in Canada have already implemented a vast range of responsible gambling controls intended precisely to ensure that the sites are only used by adults. The move has pushed gambling professionals like Steven Salz, founder of esports betting company Rivalry, to note that this only means operators will be pushed to be “more creative”. In a statement sent out to Canadian media, he acknowledged that the industry “historically relied heavily on celebrity and athlete endorsements”.
Other operators who have already been through a similar process in other jurisdictions also anticipated the need to adjust a substantial chunk of existing advertising material. William Woodhams, CEO of the British bookmaker Fitzdares, told media platform The Globe and Mail that, while the operator is facing the possibility of adjusting their advertising campaigns, they’re also asking AGCO for further clarifications about what is and isn’t allowed in relation to online casinos Canada advertising.
Ontario’s background in igaming
The celebrity ban is significant in light of the fact that Ontario was the first Canadian province to announce an open, regulated online gambling market for online casinos in Canada in April 2022. A legal infrastructure was created that made AGCO responsible for the granting of all iGaming licenses via its subsidiary iGaming Ontario.
All licensed operators must comply with a set of rules and regulations that are imposed by AGCO via its Standards for Internet Gaming regulations. These include anything related to gambling advertising and marketing.
Since the market opened, the sector has seen a massive increase in the total revenue from gaming for the province, with the Q2 revenue for 2023 increasing to $545 million, compared to $162 million throughout the same period the previous year.
This growth prompted critics like The Centre for Addictions and Mental Health, as well as other mental health advocates and Canada’s New Democratic Party to call for more stringent control over gambling advertising. As a result, AGCO launched a public consultation process in April 2023, with the results leading to the celebrity advertising ban.
Conclusion: How will this affect the best online casinos in Canada?
The precise impact – if any – that this ban is likely to have on online casino Canada sites remains to be seen. The online gambling industry is known for being extremely agile and adaptable to situations, and it’s very unlikely that industry leaders won’t find a way to circumnavigate this advertising ban. As gambling operators put their collective creative hats on, we eagerly await more developments to report.

SkyCity Online casino has been around since 2019, which might seem like a short time, but in the world of online casinos, rapid technological advances mean that casinos over four years need to be spruced up. SkyCity launched online with an easy-to-use website, but as it’s been online a while now, a revamp would go a long way towards keeping the excitement going.
However, despite its slightly tired look, SkyCity still attracts players daily because of its 1000 pokies and table games, virtual sports, and a welcome bonus, including 70 No Wagering Free Spins. SkyCity is a fun-filled online casino that offers a high-class act for Kiwis to enjoy, but their website is in need of a revamp. SkyCity is powered by dozens of software providers, including NetEnt, Microgaming and Play’n GO.
Recently, the SkyCity Group suffered bad news when the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) lodged an application for SkyCity’s casino operator’s licence to be temporarily suspended for ten days. This was in the wake of a customer complaining that SkyCity breached Responsible Gambling laws. While this is bad publicity for the casino giant, it remains the top physical casino in NZ and NZ’s favourite brick-and-mortar casino Group.
