The Games and Percentages that Contribute to Online Casino Wagering Requirements
Online casinos are known for offering an assortment of regular promotions and bonuses to attract new players and retain existing ones. However, the bonuses you will find at online sites come with terms and conditions and wagering requirements are the most common one. Also known as playthrough requirement or rollover requirements, wagering requirement refers to the number of times you must wager the bonus before making any withdrawals. When you read the bonus wagering terms at most online casinos, you will realize that different games feed into wagering requirements by contributing different percentages toward it.
Slot machines, for instance, contribute a bigger percentage than other games such as blackjack, video poker, and roulette. So, if you want to convert your casino bonus into cash quickly, you need to wager your bonus on those games that contribute a bigger percentage. Keep reading this article and discover the percentage each casino game contributes and why it differs from one game to another.
A List of Games and its Contribution to Wagering Requirements
Top-rated online casinos have a vast range of games that you can play using bonus offers to fulfill wagering requirements. The most popular ones include slot machines, scratch cards, blackjack, roulette, video poker, and live dealer casino games. Online slots are the most common ones and contribute 100% towards wagering requirements. This means that all the money you wager on slots counts towards wagering requirements. However, there are some selected slots that contribute 50% towards fulfilling wagering requirements.
Most scratch cards also contribute 100% toward fulfilling wagering requirements. If you want to withdraw your bonus as soon as possible, the best games to play are slots and scratch cards. There are reasons why slots and scratch cards contribute such a big percentage. One of them is that the games have a high house edge, meaning that the casino will have an advantage over the player. In other words, the chances of players losing to the casino are always higher. The other reason is that slots and scratch cards are games of chance. What this means is that there is no skill or strategy you can apply as a player to influence the results.
On the other hand, most roulette games contribute around 50% towards wagering requirements. As you probably know, roulette is a game of chance, just like slots and scratch cards. However, the house edge of most roulette games is smaller than that of slots and scratch cards. To this end, online casinos want you to use more of your bonus money on slots instead of roulette. This explains why roulette contributes around 50% and not 100%.
Blackjack, some table games and video poker contribute around 10% towards wagering requirements. These table games, especially blackjack, have a low house edge, meaning that players have chances of winning more. As a result, online casinos don’t want you to spend your bonus money on these games. And to achieve that, they only allow 10% of your wager to count towards fulfilling wagering requirements. Blackjack and video poker are also games of skill. This means you can apply skills and strategies and increase your chances of winning. At some online casinos, you will find that some games of skill don’t contribute anything towards fulfilling wagering requirements.
Here is a table showing the contribution of each of the casino games:
| Casino Game | Wagering Contribution |
| Slots | 100% |
| Scratch cards | 100% |
| Roulette | 50% |
| Blackjack, video poker, and baccarat | 10% |
| Live games | 0-10% |
How to Choose the Right Online Casino with Low Wagering
The online casino industry is enormous with many gaming sites that promise you generous bonuses and promotions. However, some of the sites will promise you low wagering casino bonuses but will not hold the end of their deal. In fact, some casinos will wait for you to complete wagering requirements and then introduce unfair terms that were not there initially. To make sure you choose the best online casino with low rollover requirements, you should consider the following factors:
- Licensing information – The first thing you need to check when choosing the best low wagering casino site is the legal background. You need to check whether the casino is licensed and regulated by respected licensing bodies like the Malta Gaming Authority and Curacao eGaming Authority. A casino with a clean legal background means that you can wager your bonus and withdraw winnings without issues.
- Game variety – Another important aspect you need to check is the game variety. Specifically, you need to check if you can wager your casino bonus on a wide variety of casino games. You can, for instance, check if you can use low wagering casino bonuses on slot machines, table games, video poker, jackpots, and live games. You should also check the wagering contribution of each of the games to make sure it is reasonable.
- Bonus offerings – An online casino with plenty of low wagering casino bonuses is a big plus. The best low wagering casino to join should have bonuses such as free spins, match bonuses, reload bonuses, cashback bonuses, and no deposit bonuses. The terms and conditions for these bonus offers should also be fair.
- Payment methods – Most low wagering casino bonuses require a minimum qualifying deposit. As a result, you need to check if there are safe, secure, and reliable payment methods for making deposits. You can check if the casino offers payment methods such as e-wallets, cryptocurrencies, bank transfers, and credit/debit cards.
- Customer service – As a player, you will always encounter some issues that need to be solved by the customer support team. It is, therefore, important you check if the low wagering casino offers 24/7 customer support via multiple support channels.

In particular, the 500 free spins on the first four deposits have wagering requirements of 30X. On the other hand, the match welcome bonus of up to $1500 comes with wagering requirements of 40X.

The casino’s VIP program, which has 8 VIP levels, offers you birthday bonuses with varying wagering requirements. For example, the lowest VIP level (VIP1) has a birthday bonus with wagering requirements of 30X. On the other hand, VIP level 7 has a 10X wagering requirement, while the birthday bonus at VIP level 8 is wager-free.
Regarding the registration process, you can sign up with Katsubet in less than 2 minutes. All you need to do is head to the top-right corner of the homepage and click on the “SIGN-UP” button. After that, you will complete the form by filling in details such as email address, password, country, and currency.
Conclusion
Online casino bonuses are a great way to explore online casino games without having to spend more of your money. However, you need to bear in mind that bonus offers have wagering requirements. You also need to note that different casino games contribute differently towards fulfilling wagering requirements. Games such as slots and scratch cards usually contribute a large percentage. Therefore, it is important you use your bonus on slots and scratch cards if you want to cashout your bonus as soon as possible. The only problem with slots and scratch cards is that they have a high house edge compared to other games.
It is also important you select online casino bonuses with the lowest wagering requirements. For instance, you can claim casino bonuses with wagering requirements ranging from 10X-40X. A low wagering requirement is important because it means that you can claim the bonus and wager it before it expires. Moreover, you don’t need to spend more of your money trying to fulfill high turnover requirements.
Celebrity Gambler – Martin Moshal: The Microgaming Man backing South African politics
By Ramona Depares
He may not love the limelight, but the limelight certainly loves him! Meet Martin Moshal, one of the men who’s had the strongest influence on the best online casinos. Born in Durban, Martin is reputed to be behind the lion’s share of political funding ahead of South Africa’s 2024 general election, helping the Democratic Alliance, Action SA and Build One South Africa achieve their aims. Just to put things in perspective, these are three of the most important players on the SA political landscape.
But this is not the main reason we’re interested in Martin. We’ve already mentioned that he’s one of the biggest names in the gambling world. This is because Martin is reputed to have made all the money that allows him to contribute to political and philanthropic causes in the online casino industry.
Although he’s not fond of giving interviews, leading journalists like The Guardian’s Rob Davies have credited him with changing the face of online casino real money gambling in his book Jackpot: How Gambling Conquered Britain. In fact, he is widely believed to have created the world’s first online casino software through Microgaming, which he also founded. Hence, he enjoys the nickname ‘The Microgaming Man’ to this very day.
This first breakthrough took place way back in 1994, when online casinos looked nothing like they do today and Martin was a fresh-faced graduate from the University of Cape Town, where he had specialized in information technology, accounts, business administration and economics. It was just the perfect mix of subjects to springboard his idea for a casino software company.
Back then, Martin didn’t have access to the fortune he enjoys now, and it took a bank loan from SA bank Discover Bank Ltd to make this dream a reality. Given his age and lack of experience, to secure the loan he had to offer a 50% ownership in what was to become Microgaming to the bank. The ploy worked, and the rest is online casino history.
Today, Martin is based in Australia, and he’s faced his fair share of challenges. The biggest spot of trouble he encountered was undoubtedly in 2020, when he was revealed to be the secret owner of Betway, which at the time was facing allegations of failing to meet responsible gambling requirements by offering cash bonuses to those suffering from gambling problems.
Martin had to admit to the ownership after the British media broke the news that he was the owner of an Isle of Man trust that was the main shareholder of Betway at the time.

Martin Moshal: The Microgaming Man
When Martin Moshal graduated, the world was a very different place to what it is now. The online space was still full of undiscovered potential, and nowhere was this more evident than in the sphere of online casinos.
Martin’s interest had always veered heavily towards online gambling, a topic he was very passionate about – and not just as a player. He was always described by friends and acquaintances as having one big dream, that of creating the first online gaming software that would popularize top online casinos and make them accessible to the vast public.
Martin’s academic background in finances and tech made him ideally-placed to be able to pursue this dream, as did his passion for political sciences.
It was 1994 when he got his proposal together and approached a South African bank, Discover Bank Ltd, for a loan. Although he met with a few challenges, the loan was eventually granted and Microgaming was born. Within four years, the company released its first game – Cash Splash, which was also the world’s first progressive online slot. Cash Splash was an immediate hit, popularizing online casino games and spawning multiple sequels and variations. To date, more than 27 years after its release, it remains a fan favorite.
Throughout the company’s early years, Martin was responsible for the vast majority of its successes, getting in a number of patents for game mechanics and jackpot wagering. By the time the company moved to Isle of Man in 2021, it was estimated that more than one-third of the world’s online casinos were serviced by Microgaming. Martin’s dream had officially become reality.
Today, Microgaming is synonymous with high-quality gaming software, and it has produced a stable of titles are considered the cream of the crop of games, present at all the best online casinos. Thanks to games like Thunderstruck, to Big Bad Wolf and Breaking Da Bank, the popularity of online gambling was secured.
Partnerships with Martin Moshal
If you’re wondering how Martin went from being a broke graduate to one of the richest people in the world – although he refuses to disclose his actual net worth – the answer to that is his natural ingeniousness. Remember how Microgaming wouldn’t have been possible without a bank loan? Well, the bank loan wouldn’t have been possible without Martin’s ability to think outside the box – and a good dose of luck too, of course.
When Martin first approached the bank, he had zero credit or business experience and the request was initially declined. However, it did lead to a meeting of minds with one of the loans and business advisors employed at the bank. That man was Roger Raatgever, and he immediately fell in love with Martin’s idea to create the first online casino gaming platform. So Martin went back to him with a counter-proposal – approve the loan and he’d sign off 50% share of his new business.
The deal was sealed and Microgaming was born. This innovative approach followed Martin in everything he did, leading to further successes along the way. It’s not exaggeration to say that everything he touched turned to gold, even going as far as to earn the nickname CyberSol, a reference to the achievement of entertainment and hospitality magnate Sol Kerzner, incidentally a fellow South African.
Today, Martin has fingers in a number of pies in the tech industries and is involved in various investment and entrepreneurial activities, including venture capital firm Entree Capital, which brings together a team of investors to identify winning entrepreneurial ideas and has invested into more than 130 start-ups worldwide. Although Martin always manages to keep details under wraps, his interests remain very focused on software development and other tech-driven industries.
Martin Moshal and Philanthropy
Martin’s legendary status is not simply because he is rich and successful. It has a lot to do with his strong reputation as a philanthropist. He is the founder of The Moshal Scholarship Program, which was inspired by Martin’s own journey and the challenges he encountered within the education landscape. The aim behind the program is to provide promising students from underprivileged backgrounds with the financial support needed to pursue higher education in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths).
The program has been active since 2009 and offers young people a full package of financial aid, mentoring, internships and even employment opportunities, going way beyond a regular scholarship. This has enabled students to equip themselves not only with education, but also with soft skills and the networking opportunities needed to foster successful careers.
Martin also is also reputed to be involved in other philanthropic efforts that are related to education, technology, and community development.
Closing Thoughts: Beyond the Billionaire
Martin Moshal is undoubtedly one of the most iconic figures in the online casino landscape worldwide, offering the perfect example of how business and philanthropy can work together to tremendous success. Although he continues to shy away from the limelight, plenty of those who have benefitted from his generosity regularly sing his praises online.
And, of course, casino players owe Martin an especially huge vote of confidence, as he was the main driver behind several gambling innovations that we take for granted nowadays. Clearly, crediting the man with the creation of the best online casino platforms is no exaggeration.

Romania moves to ban gambling venues in small towns
By Shadrack Kairu
Stricter gambling laws are coming to Romania. The lawmakers have approved Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu’s executive order that bans gambling venues in small towns and villages with populations not exceeding 15,000 residents. The so-called “law on slot machines” was reportedly passed by the Chamber of Deputies via a unanimous vote. Some 243 deputies voted in the ban’s favour, four were absent, while two did not vote. As traditional gambling venues face these new restrictions, many players may turn to online casinos as an alternative, seeking a regulated environment to continue their gaming activities.
This legislation is one of its kind in the history of gambling in Romania. It states that slot machines and gambling facilities should not appear near remote areas and sparsely populated towns. It effectively criminalizes gambling in localities with populations of less than 15,000 people.
Two main reasons given by the parliament were considered critical in justifying the passing of this legislation. These include tackling the issues of gambling addiction and mitigating the potential consequences posed by unregulated gambling in Romania.
Through this legislation, first and foremost, policymakers hope to reduce excessive gambling. Additionally, they aim to protect vulnerable communities from exploitation and put brakes on the rapid proliferation of gambling venues, primarily in small localities. As reported, this ban will affect almost 90% of all localities in Romania, signalling a noteworthy shift in the country’s approach to regulating its gambling sector.
Stats on gambling in Romania
Gambling in Romania officially took off in 1906 when the country installed its first democratic government. The dictator’s regime was overthrown to pave the way for introducing a liberal economy. Right now, gambling in this southeastern European country is conducted on a large scale.
The National Gaming Office, the state body that registers and approves the sector, states that the Romania gambling market consists of about 12,000 land-based gambling venues. It’s in these facilities that sports betting services, casino games, lotteries, bingo, and other gambling forms, are offered to the public. These venues pay taxes to the government in the form of license and advertising fees and ticket sales. The proceeds are used to fund public works and services.
It’s worthwhile to note that online gambling in Romania became legal in 2010. With that, trusted internet operators were entitled to receive a government license. Online gambling in the country had reached new levels by the early 2000s.
Online gambling operators contribute tax revenues to the government as do land-based venues. But in addition to annual licensing fees, online providers are to pay authorization fees, responsible gaming contributions, online gamers’ winnings, and miscellaneous fees.
Romania’s revenue in the online gambling market is projected to reach $809.50m in 2024, according to Statistica, with an annual growth rate of 5.6% from 2024-2029. It will thus result in a projected market volume of $1.063m by 2029.
Specifically, the user penetration in the online gaming market will hit 3.5% in 2024, indicating a remarkable surge in online gambling activity.
The proliferation of gambling across the country has prompted the government to tighten its gambling regulation measures. In 2015, Romania introduced its first comprehensive gambling law. This was intended to address the rapid spread of gambling and to ensure a secure, fair, and responsible gaming environment for its citizens.
As if that was not enough, in October 2023, the Romanian government introduced newer, stricter sets of restrictive measures for the gambling sector. Notably, the Ministry of Finance announced a huge hike in license fees for gambling operators. Operators will now pay €500,000/year for an online casino license, €200,000 for a lottery license, and €100 per machine for video lottery terminals licenses. Others are casino licenses costing €4,000 per table, bingo gaming halls costing €5,000, and poker costing €5,000 per club. Licenses for telecast bingo games will now cost €500,000.
But even as the government rolls out all these measures, there’s no recent data to show exactly how many Romanian citizens suffer from gambling addiction. According to Euronews, the last survey was reportedly done in 2016 and found that there were an estimated 100,000 addicted gamblers in Romania. However, the source cautions that the number today could be even higher.
Recent research by Save the Children shows that 1 in 7 children across the country spends money on gambling. Also, it shows that at least 10% of Romanian children have a parent who spends money on gambling.
What Legislators say about gambling
Proponents of the law say that the passing of the legislation is a major milestone towards curbing the negative influence of excessive gambling on vulnerable populations. Following the law’s passing, the PM took the opportunity to declare the coalition government’s victory over illegal gambling operations reaching remote and densely populated country areas. He reportedly said that this marks the end of the “good old days” for illegal gambling facilities as the ban will likely affect nearly 90% of such establishments in Romania.
Alfred Simonis, the leader of the Social Democrats, echoed the PM’s sentiments. “It is the first law adopted in Parliament in 30 years against this mafia that has controlled the political world until now,” he said.
He stressed the need to take decisive actions in controlling the pervasive influence of gambling in Romania. “Right now we are fighting an industry that has a total turnover of €10-12 billion”.
Meanwhile, some factions raised questions over the manner in which this legislation was formulated. Descending voices within the parliamentary chamber said the government could’ve taken stricter measures to address the detrimental impacts of gambling on society. They criticize the government for not consulting with stakeholders prior to its implementation or, respectively, question how the population figure of 15,000 was reached. Some even accuse the authorities of collusion with the gaming sector due to the perceived leniency of measures taken by the government.
Ionut Mosteanu, the leader of the opposition USR, is on record saying “They thought that slot machines only damage 15,000 people”. He further stated, “There was not even a debate to see how many townships qualify for this 15,000. Why not 16, 17, why not two million and you would ban them definitively?”
On the other side, industry players from the gambling sector remained optimistic that, through this new piece of legislation, the authorities will effectively stamp out the black market, which they said thrives in the absence of legal gambling options.
It is worth noting that this legislation was first introduced on 6 October 2023. Under the Romanian Constitution, it was supposed to go through both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate for approval. However, the government through PM Ciolac signed an Emergency Ordinance that allowed the bill to move to the lower house of parliament for fast tracing.
Upon the parliament’s discretion, the legislation could be approved as it is, approved with amendments or rejected altogether. If rejected, it would no longer be effective.
Now that this ordinance has been approved, it rests with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, who may decide to put it into law or send it back to parliament. If approved, the law states that it will take effect within 10 days of being officially enacted.
According to reports, once this ban comes into force, it will affect the operations of Romania’s 27 licensed sports wagering operators. Even market leaders such as SuperBet, Rizio, StanleyBet, Mozzart Kladionica, and Fortuna Entertainment, will be affected.
Atlantic City casino workers head to court to have smoking banned at land-based casinos
By Ramona Depares
Atlantic City casino players who enjoy a smoke or two at the tables and slots may very well see their plans go up in smoke, as the long-debated ban for smoking at land-based casinos in the US is now heading to court for a definitive ruling.
Naturally, this isn’t an issue players at the top online casinos face, but the controversy at retail outlets has been raging for quite some time. Since 2006, in fact, when the Smoke-Free Air Act was enacted to guarantee a smoke-free environment for US workers. The act, however, exempted all casinos from its provisions.
Atlantic City casino workers, as well as some of the gamblers themselves, have long complained about exposure to second-hand smoke at these venues. Now, United Auto Workers and another group representing casino employees have filed a lawsuit demanding that the law be amended to extend its protection to casino workers.
How harmful is second-hand smoke at land-based casinos?
The continued rise of online casinos in the US may have pushed the issue to the back burner, but the health risks associated with second-hand smoke in casinos are significant and well-documented. Independently carried out research has been pretty consistent in confirming that casino workers and patrons are exposed to dangerous levels of toxic substances when smoking is permitted.
A study conducted by the BMJ Journals (Babb S, McNeil C, Kruger J, et al Secondhand smoke and smoking restrictions in casinos: a review of the evidenceTobacco Control 2015;24:11-17.) goes as far as to say that “there is no safe level of secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure”. The study describes smoking in casinos as a “significant public health problem”, adding that both casino employees and guests are exposed to high levels of SHS”.
This was confirmed by the elevated levels of tobacco-specific biomarkers in blood tests carried out on non-smokers. Even more worryingly, the study revealed that partial smoking restrictions, or designated smoke-free zones, did not do anything to protect non-smokers from SHS. The study concluded that this risk to employees and patrons is both significant and preventable, calling it “imperative for public health and workplace safety that smoking in casinos be stringently regulated or completely banned”.
The BMJ Journals noted that the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers agreed that “at present, the only means of effectively eliminating health risk associated with indoor exposure is to ban smoking activity.” The statement also referred to a study of 25 casinos in the UK, where 83% of participants reported being nearly always exposed to SHS at work, 78% stated that they minded if people smoked near them at work, 57% believed they had health problems as a result of second-hand smoke at work and a whopping 65% supported banning smoking in all customer and working areas of their casinos.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) echoes the words of the above, calling SHS at land-based casinos a “cause of premature death among US workers”. Casino workers, according to the American Cancer Society, face a higher risk of illness caused by SHS than any other workers.
This risk includes a higher incidence of lung cancer. Casinos were found to have nicotine concentrations that are 2.4 to 18.5 times higher than in offices and homes, and 1.5 to 11.7 times higher than in restaurants. The ACS quotes a study by Achutan C, West C, Mueller C., Boudreau Y, and Mead K (2009) on the impact of SHS in Pennsylvania casinos, which found that exposure causes five times as many premature deaths as the mining disasters that had afflicted the state.
In studies carried out by the National Cancer Institute, casinos were also found to have 12 times as many smoke particles than you find outdoors, with nicotine and a number of toxins – including carcinogens, benzene, naphthalene, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde. Moreover, casino guests were found with significantly elevated levels of a lung carcinogen caused by tobacco after a four-hour visit to a casino where smoking was allowed.
Studies quoted by the ACS also suggest that partial bans don’t work, as a study in 21 Nevada casinos revealed that guests at a non-smoking restaurant that was adjacent to the gaming areas where smoking is permitted had 60% of the amount of SHS as guests in the smoking areas.
Even the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has weighed in on the matter. A blog post by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) describes how the Institute has gone on record saying that “even low levels of secondhand smoke exposure can be harmful” and even recommended that smoking right next to building entrances and air intakes should be prohibited so as to prevent any smoke from entering indoors. The Institute added that casinos should appoint a physician to evaluate employees who were suffering from respiratory issues origins from workplace exposures.
Finally, the National Cancer Institute leaves no room for doubt about the perils of second-hand smoke to casino workers, noting that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. National Toxicology Program, the U.S. Surgeon General, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer have all classified secondhand smoke as a known human carcinogen. It added that some research also points to an increase in breast cancer, nasal sinus cavity cancer, and nasopharyngeal cancer in adults.
When one considers all this, together with the fact that the National Council of Legislators from the Gaming States had actually passed a resolution to support 100% smoke-free gaming venues as long ago as 2009, it is hardly surprising to see that casino workers in Atlantic City and across the US are up in arms about it.
What the lawsuit states
So what is the basis of the lawsuit? Put simply, casino workers’ representatives are disputing an exemption found in the Smoke-Free Air Act. Although this act bans smoking in enclosed, indoor public places and workplaces, it contains a section that specifically exempts all land-based casinos and bingo parlours from this ban.
According to news reports, the lawsuit names New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and State Health Commissioner Kaitlan Baston as failing to protect the health of casino workers by not including them in this ban.
The lawsuit was filed by the United Auto Workers union, representing workers at Bally’s, Caesars and Tropicana casinos in New Jersey alongside a group called Casino Employees Against Smoking’s (Harmful) Effects (CEASE).
What are workers hoping to get from the lawsuit?
The Atlantic City smoking ban lawsuit hinges on the casino workers’ claim that the exclusion is considered unconstitutional in New Jersey because it grants favouritism to the casinos. The exemption also denied workers their state constitutional right to safety and equal protection.
Claiming that some casino workers have suffered cancer as a result of this situation, the lawsuit is asking for the exemption granted by the Smoke-Free Act to be declared unconstitutional. While the NJ Health Department refused to comment pending litigation, in reality, there has been some progress made in the battle as the governor has gone on record to say that he would sign a bill banning smoking in casinos.
How Will This Lawsuit Affect Casinos In Other States?
How this will affect other gambling states across the US remains to be seen, with Pennsylvania already seeking to amend its own Clean Indoor Air Act of 2008 to include a ban in casinos and bars. Should the Atlantic City casino workers lawsuit be successful, it is likely to have wider-reaching implications for casinos across other states.
If this were to pass, it is also very likely that US online casinos will see an increased surge in popularity, with gamblers who don’t want to give up smoking while enjoying their pastime spending more time online in the privacy of their homes.

LeBron James and Gambling
LeBron James is a fan of NBA and NFL, but there is no clear information on whether he gambles or not. During the 2023 NFL season, James would only be seen going live on his Instagram account to give his NFL picks. He did this every week before the games started, with fans saying he only shared his expertise with those who wanted to listen.
The 39-year-old Basketball player, however, has been in the past allegedly being spotted gambling in Las Vegas during the NBA in-season tournament final. In a video posted on social media by a fan, King James is seen gambling in what looks like a private room at Wynn Casino. The video also shows a security guard approaching the fan and telling him that he cannot record LeBron because he is gambling. Lebron is also heard telling the security guard to check the recently deleted folder. The caption added to the short video shows that the Basketball player had $1 in Chips on the table.
In an interview conducted by federal agents in November 2021, Maverick Carter, who is a longtime manager and business partner of LeBron, admitted to betting on NBA. In his part, LeBron said that he didn’t know that his longtime manager placed bets on NBA. He further noted that Carter was not the target of the investigation, and federal agents were only investigating Wayne Nix, who was accused of operating an illegal sports betting ring.
More and more renowned athletes have in the recent past been involved with online casinos and online sports Betting, changing the public perception regarding online gambling. Most of the athletes are public figures trusted by millions of fans, and companies believe that partnering with such celebrities would increase their customer base. In other words, any engagement with a celebrity gambler is a marketing strategy, and companies have reaped a lot from it.
LeBron Partnership with DraftKings: A Closer Look
As part of the deal, LeBron James will work with DraftKings on various football initiatives, with a focus on Football Handicapping. He will achieve this by creating content on topics like weekly NFL picks. It is worth mentioning that NBA doesn’t allow Basketball players and coaches to publicly discuss matters related to betting on the league’s game. As a result, King James will not be covering NBA betting in his content.
More details about the deal, including financial transactions and the length of the partnership, have not been made public. In his statement, DraftKings CEO Jason Robins said, “Welcoming one of the most influential and greatest athletes of all time, LeBron James, to the DraftKings family is an absolute honor and privilege. We look forward to working with sports fans who share the same competitive mindset that echoes throughout the wall at DraftKings while delivering exciting engagement opportunities to our customers and his loyal fanbase for years to come.”
DraftKings’ vision is to build the most trusted and most centric destination for gambling fans. And with LeBron James on board, we can confidently say that the partnership deal aligns perfectly with DrafKings’ goals. The Basketball player has a deep understanding of the NFL league, and it is pretty clear that a good number of his fans will benefit from his valuable insights. Additionally, the partnership could result in more betting bonuses for LeBron’s fans and attract more audiences, including the NBA market.
LeBron’s Influence on Betting Culture and Fan Engagement
LeBron’s partnership with DraftKings is not just about NFL picks; it is about changing the betting culture. For a long time, the majority of people have been considering sports betting as an activity that goes against moral values. However, with iconic basketball players like LebBron on board, the negative perception about sports betting is expected to change for the better. The collaboration is also expected to change how sports betting firms engage with their audience. By partnering with renowned athletes, DraftKings is setting a new standard for fan engagement in the online gambling industry.
It is worth noting that having a high-profile athlete associated with a sports betting site could bring both benefits and harm. The brighter side is that Iconic Athletes like LeBron have a vast knowledge of Football, meaning players may get helpful insights that could influence their betting strategies. Betting firms that have signed the deal also earn huge profits due to the large customer base. On the other hand, over-trusting high-profile athletes could lead to problem gambling among bettors. Some celebrities may also rule you into signing up with scammers.
Closing Thoughts: Beyond the Court
The collaboration between NBA superstar ReBron James and the leading sports betting firm DraftKings marks a significant milestone in the sports betting industry. The 39-year-old Basketball player is an all-time leading scorer, and many people know him for bagging four NBA championships. His partnership with the giant sportsbook will see him share valuable insights and picks on NFL, thanks to his deep knowledge and passion for Football. Moreover, the partnership is expected to change the sports betting culture for the better. A new standard for betting firms has also been set, and we will now start seeing sportsbooks engaging their fans in a better way. Be sure to check how this partnership will unfold and what its impact will be on the sports betting industry.
Celebrating English and Spanish Language Week 2024: The Battle of Dialects in Casino Lingo
Join us this week (22-26 April 2024) as we celebrate the English Language and Spanish Language Days to recognize the linguistic diversity that enriches our understanding and enjoyment of the gaming world. Whether you’re placing a bet in a Las Vegas casino, spinning a “pokie” in New Zealand, depositing a “loonie” at Canadian $1 deposit casinos, or betting “tjips” in a South African online casino, the variations in English and Spanish dialects offer a fascinating glimpse into how language influences our experiences and connections. Join us in celebrating a world of gaming that’s as diverse as the English and Spanish languages themselves.
From the virtual poker rooms of top online casinos to the vibrant live dealer games streamed from around the world, each English and Spanish-speaking region contributes its unique slang to the digital gaming table. This year, we spotlight how these regional dialects shape online casino expressions, creating a diverse linguistic tapestry that enhances the gaming experience.

English Casino Terms and Their Regional Twists
- “Slots” vs “Pokies” vs “Fruit Machines”: While gamers in the US (and, in general, globally) click on “slot machines,” Kiwis in New Zealand play “pokies,” and South Africans enjoy “fruit machines” in their online casinos.
- “Croupier” vs “Dealer”: In live dealer games, the UK might feature a “croupier,” especially at Roulette or Blackjack tables, while in the US, New Zealand, and South Africa, the term “dealer” is more commonly used.
- “Ante” vs “Buy-in”: In online poker, “ante” is widely recognized, but in UK and South African poker rooms, “buy-in” is the more frequent term, reflecting subtle regional language preferences.
Spanish Casino Terms and Their Regional Twists
- “Tragamonedas” vs “Pokies”: While in Spain, they’re known as “tragamonedas” or “tragaperras” in certain Latin American regions, such as Argentina and Mexico, players often refer to them as “pokies,” showcasing regional variations.
- “Crupier” vs “Dealer”: While “crupier” is commonly used across Spanish-speaking regions, in areas like Argentina and Mexico, the English term “dealer” is also prevalent, particularly in contexts of poker and blackjack.
- “Apuesta inicial” vs “Buy-in”: While “apuesta inicial” is commonly used in Spain to describe the initial bet in poker, in some Latin American countries, including Mexico and Argentina, “buy-in” is adopted, influenced by English terminology.
As Minimum Deposit Casinos, our focus is not only about affordability; it’s about inclusivity. By emphasizing unique monetary terms used across different English and Spanish-speaking regions, we tailor our services to be welcoming and accessible to a global audience, ensuring everyone can enjoy the thrill of gaming without the barrier of language or high deposits.
Happy English and Spanish Language Week to all our casino enthusiasts!
Spanish consumers are ordered to declare gambling winnings in tax returns
By Ramona Depares
Spanish gamblers who have been playing fast and loose with their tax obligations are in for a rude awakening as the government is turning its gaze towards tax on winnings from both land-based and online casinos.
Although up till now the small matter of paying the government its share of any winnings was not particularly enforced, it looks as though things are set to change drastically following a surprise announcement by the tax administration agency in Spain. Agencia Tributaria (AEAT) director general Soledad Fernández stated that the agency would increase its scrutiny of profits from online casinos. Also in the line of fire are profits from cryptocurrency, foreign income and property rentals.
And, as the Spanish population is on the cusp of filing income tax returns for the year 2023, the decision couldn’t have come at a more inconvenient time. So far, the agency has already issued around 2.9 million notices to taxpayers, including 64,000 notices about winnings arising from gambling and around 1 million notices regarding profits from crypto. The move is unprecedented.
The Spanish government had already been heavily criticized for lowering the threshold for tax due on gambling profits in 2022. Now, things look set to heat up as critics like the Partido Popular (PP), Spain’s Conservative Party and opposition, are unlikely to let this go by quietly.
Unpacking the tax requirements for gambling winnings in Spain
There was a time when winnings from the best online casinos weren’t subject to any tax if you’re in Spain – as long as these are under €300. Then, in September 2022 the Ministry of Finance decided to close what it referred to as a “loophole” and to start charging tax on all winnings, including those under the €300 threshold. This was done by amending tax model 190 on personal income declarations for business, economic, gambling, and capital gains, which also required the declaration of prizes of under €300.
To understand exactly how much tax a Spanish gambler who hits it lucky at online casinos will now have to pay, we need to backtrack a little and cover the different classifications of gambling under Spanish law.
In Spain, the law recognises two types of gambling activities for the purposes of filing a tax return – the first refers to winnings from state-controlled lotteries, both of which have a long and illustrious history in the country. In this case, the state applies a flat rate of 20% tax on winnings over €2,500 that is applied to a personal income exemption of €40,000 per year.
The other category is for winnings derived from private gambling outlets. Winnings from an online casino would fall within the latter category, and it’s here that things get a bit more complicated. The actual percentage of tax paid depends on two factors – how much you win and your base income for that year. To put it simply the amount you win is added to your gross annual income, and the following tax rates are applied to the entire amount:
- Income (including any winnings) up to €12,450 euros: 19%.
- Between €12,450 and €20,200: 24%.
- Between €20,200 and €35,200: 30%.
- Between €35,200 euros and €60,000: 37%.
- Between €60,000 and €300,000: 45%.
- More than €300,000: 47%.
Up till 2023, any winnings under $300 did not qualify for the above and Spanish gamblers were under no obligation to declare them. As of last year, the requirement of disclosure was imposed on any amount of winnings, no matter how small, with the obligation already in force when the 2022 base year tax return was being filed. However, it’s only this year that the government has stepped up efforts to ensure this law is respected, sending out notices ahead of tax filing season and warning taxpayers that any infringements would be prosecuted.
Based on the newly-enforced law, let’s say that you win €100 while playing at online casinos, and your base income is $30,000, which means that your total income is €30,100. Here’s how you will be taxed:
- 12,450 at 19%.
- 7,750 at 24%.
- 9,900 at 30%
Sports betting and casino winnings need to be declared on a separate form from the regular income. Although this law has been in force throughout 2023, it appears that efforts now are going to be revved up to ensure that Spanish gamblers pay the government its dues.
So what happens if you fail to declare any winnings? For starters, you’ll be falling foul of the Spanish Tax Agency, which has already declared that it will be going through casino revenue with a fine-tooth comb so as to scope out anyone trying to shirk their responsibilities. If you’re caught, you will obviously have to pay the tax anyway, but you’re also looking at a late payment fee and a fine that can be anything between 50% and 150% of the tax owed.
Sadly, the chances of being caught out are reasonably high, as the General Directorate of Gaming Regulation in Spain automatically receives all data collected about the identity and activity of players (including winnings). This applies not only to land-based but also to online casinos. This means that they literally have a list of all the names of those who should be paying gambling tax. Very difficult to escape that one, so our advice is in all matters to respect the law!
Specific declarations on crypto and foreign transactions
Spain has always viewed crypto and foreign transactions (such as those involving NFTs) as capital gains and taxed them accordingly. Taxpayers were always obliged to declare any profits in their annual tax return, with tax being levied on the profit made when you sell your crypto for fiat or for other cryptocurrencies, or even when you sell an NFT. The amount you pay depends on the amount of net profit made, as per the below table:
- Profits up to €6,000 – 19%
- Profits between €6,000 and €50,000 – 21%
- Profits between €50,000 and €200,000 – 23%
- Profits between €200,000 – €300,000 – 27%
- Profits over €300,000 – 28%
The amount of profit is calculated using a specific formula that depends on the price fluctuation since you originally purchased your crypto. Let’s take a concrete example:
- You buy 0.05 BTC for €3.000 + 2% transaction fees. In this case, your cost €3,060.
- You then sell it for €3,400. This means you’ve made a profit of €340 which is considered as a capital gain and is thus taxed at 19%.
Buying crypto with fiat is not taxable while receiving crypto via a mining process is taxed as regular income. The same applies to any crypto received as a salary.
So what has changed? While tax rates have remained the same, the finance ministry has sent out strong signals that violations will be taken more seriously. According to Spanish press El Economista, a new tax reform has been enacted allowing the ministry to seize any crypto or NFTs in case of failure to pay taxes. This year the Agencia Tributaria has already sent out 325,000 warnings to those who failed to declare their earnings in time for the March deadline. And, thanks to a collaboration with crypto exchanges, crypto transactions are very effectively monitored. As with the case of those who fail to pay income tax on winnings from online casinos, discovery is very likely.
How is this likely to affect the best online casinos in Spain?
As the whole world moves towards more effective regulation of online casinos and other forms of gambling, this move by the Spanish government may be annoying, but it certainly is not unexpected. Most European countries and US states are implementing an effective system of rules not only as a means to generate revenue but also to encourage responsible gambling. In view of this, the new tax rules are very unlikely to have a tangible impact on the popularity of the best online casinos, as players become more and more accustomed to this new legal framework.

More SkyCity Bigwigs Resign
In a surprise development, SkyCity Entertainment Group faces another significant setback as David Christian, the Chief Operating Officer, decides to leave the company. This follows the earlier exits of the company’s CEO, Michael Ahearne, and CFO, Julie Amey, marking another departure from the casino operator’s senior ranks.
Christian, who had been with SkyCity since 2005 and became COO in February 2021, left his position on April 12, 2024. His departure has impacted investor confidence, leading to a 1.33% drop in SkyCity’s shares to $/€1.85, resulting in an 18.14% decline over the past year.
In response to his departure, SkyCity has acted swiftly to secure stability, with CEO Callum Mallet stepping in to cover Christian’s duties until a permanent successor is appointed. Callum Mallet praised David’s extensive tenure with the company, highlighting his contributions in many senior positions. Specifically, David’s leadership at SkyCity Adelaide during a particularly challenging period showcased his resilience and strong management skills.
According to iGB (iGamingBusiness.com), SkyCity board chair Julian Cook stated, “On behalf of the SkyCity Adelaide board and the SkyCity board, I thank David for his tireless efforts and dedication to SkyCity and wish him well.”
However, these departures represent a major upheaval in SkyCity’s leadership, sparking conjecture and doubts about the entertainment conglomerate’s future direction. Adding to the news, the company behind this best online casino also faces allegations of noncompliance with anti-money laundering and terrorism funding legislation in Australia and New Zealand.
Uncertain Times for SkyCity
As SkyCity Entertainment Group encounters multiple setbacks and managerial changes, uncertainties surrounding the future of this operator continue to grow. Over the last year, the company has seen severe instability, including the resignation of several senior executives, including CEO Michael Ahearne.
Ahearne formally left the company in March, with Mallet taking over interim leadership while the operator searches for a permanent replacement. Mallet was formerly the chief operating officer for New Zealand, and SkyCity appointed Brad Burnett to replace him on an interim basis. Burnett was previously the general manager for table games at the Auckland facility.
SkyCity announced in February 2024 that it expects to pay an additional $/€13 million in casino duty after the South Australian Court of Appeal ruled that gaming machine credits earned through loyalty points should be counted as gaming revenue when calculating casino duty at the SkyCity Adelaide Casino.
Subsequently, the ruling will impact its underlying group EBITDA by approximately $/€2 million, with the remaining additional casino duty payable for previous periods to be paid as a one-time expense.
SkyCity’s subsidiary is facing a civil penalty prosecution by the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs after the company was suspected of violating anti-money laundering and terrorist funding legislation in both Australia and New Zealand. Besides that, the company will also go before Australia’s Federal Court in June.
Background of SkyCity
Established in 1996, SkyCity is a subsidiary of SkyCity Entertainment Group Limited, one of the world’s leading tourism, leisure, and entertainment companies. In addition to the online casino, which is available to players in New Zealand and Australia, the company also runs land-based casinos in Auckland, Hamilton, Queenstown, and Adelaide.
The company is publicly traded on both the New Zealand Stock Exchange and the Australian Securities Exchange. Its shareholder base includes institutional and individual investors. As a result, the company employs strong corporate governance standards overseen by its board of directors to guarantee compliance with guiding principles.
Brick-And-Mortar
SkyCity operates entertainment complexes in New Zealand, more specifically in Auckland, Queenstown, and Hamilton; as well as in Adelaide, Australia. These venues provide a variety of services, including gambling areas, entertainment, and high-end bars, with the goal of appealing to both local and international visitors.
There are also luxury hotel accommodations at the resorts in Auckland and Adelaide. Furthermore, some places have excellent dining options, with the dinner menu allowing you to sample items before making a decision. Most importantly, visitors can join the elite Premier Rewards club, allowing them to participate in special draws and events and enjoy great-value meals and beverages.
Online Casino Platform
In addition to its land-based casino activities, SkyCity Online Casino provides New Zealanders with a fun and immersive low-deposit casino experience. The website first went live in 2019 and has since been the go-to betting hub for New Zealanders due to its incredible game offering, professional support channels, and responsible gambling practices.
Players can enjoy over 1,000 slots, card games, and live dealers from the world’s leading casino software studios, the likes of Evolution, NetEnt, Pragmatic Play, and Microgaming. There’s even a wide selection of bonuses and promotions available to claim once registered. Find out more about the online platform by checking out our SkyCity Casino Review.
Regulatory Scrutiny and Legal Disputes
The DIA of New Zealand has announced plans to file civil penalty proceedings against SkyCity Entertainment Group in the High Court. This legal move increases the company’s problems, potentially indicating regulatory attention and financial consequences.
SkyCity Casino Management Limited is accused of failing to comply with the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Act 2009. In the event that such claims were proven partially or completely true, SCML could be fined an amount of up to $/€8.0 million.
Draft filings outline five causes of action deemed “important” compliance concerns under the Act. SkyCity stated that these issues are primarily historical, with some having previously been self-reported to the department.
SkyCity’s net debt was $/€443 million in June, with an additional $/€390 million in undrawn debt reported. In last year’s annual reports, the company stated that it expected that sum to rise due to some big one-time payments but that it would remain comfortably within its debt limits.
However, things could get worse before they improve. SkyCity has written down the value of its Adelaide casino by $/€45.6 million. However, an independent examination by the South Australian government into whether it should be stripped of its licence is still pending. It will not begin until a settlement with AUSTRAC is struck.
Asset sales must be discussed among the executives attending, at the very least. On the other hand, it might not be easy to find a buyer willing to pay anything near the middle market for an asset with as many barnacles as Adelaide.
In New Zealand, online casino regulators are still considering suspending SkyCity’s licence for 10 days due to alleged violations of regulations governing reducing gambling harm to customers and incidences of ongoing play.
Additionally, SkyCity’s warnings about a likely fall in EBITDA in 2024 serve as a sobering reminder of the looming economic issues. Such forecasts reflect the considerable uncertainties confronting the entertainment and hospitality industries and highlight the importance of bold leadership and strategy recalibration in surviving these tumultuous conditions.
Despite recent problems, SkyCity remains a significant player in the regional entertainment industry, ready to manage new challenges with tenacity and agility. SkyCity announced this week that Jason Walbridge, a strategic adviser to Aristocrat Leisure, will become the company’s CEO in July. He’ll arrive at a moment when the rollercoaster has little chance of slowing.
